Yep, here we are once again...
For those of you just tuning in, these are the rec.sport.pro-wrestling.*
Year-End Achievement Awards. They celebrate the excellence, as well as
the....opposite thereof, of the past year in professional wrestling.
The Awards are decided by the readers of r.s.p-w, voting for a 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd place in nearly fifty categories. Believe it or not, we're barely
legal - this is our EIGHTEENTH year of Awards.
Participation was flat with last year's levels, with 34 legible ballots
cast. Once again, I hope that the QUALITY of the response makes up for
the lower quantity. Again, I think we have some surprises in the results,
but pleasantly so. If you disagree - hell, you should have voted!
Thanks to everyone on r.s.p-w who participated, readers and lurkers alike!
The following pages provided invaluable assistance with research.
Bookmark them ALL right now:
The Wrestling Supercards & Tournaments Web Page is THE place to get
dates and results of every major card of the past year - and earlier
For better of worse, THE website of r.s.p-w.* - basically I threw a
bunch of links on a page but it's the quickest way to access full
versions of ALL seventeen years of awards!
Wikipedia has quickly become a great resource for looking up all sorts
of obscure minutiae, and pro wrestling is no exception!
It's Google. Nuff said.
I can be reached by emailing crz{at}rspw{dot}org, amongst other ways.
Without further ado, HEEEEEEEEEEEERE WE GO!!!!

First, some general comments...
THE UNBALANCE: pacman jones..? Is he wrestler-_-?
CRIMEFIGHTER: 2007 will be remembered as one of the worst years ever for
the wrestling industry in the United States. The Benoit Family tragedy
rocked the sport all the way to its foundation, leading to exposing a
major steroid scandal involving Signature Pharmacy that has ensnared other
pro sports from baseball to football to basketball, whereas congressional
hearings will be held on the extent of this mess in 2008. The BALCO
scandal which took down Marion Jones and Barry Bonds is likely just a
preview of what's to come. The WWE's Wellness Policy has been shown to be
ineffective and not well enforced. Getting down to the wrestling product
itself, TNA has been in a virtual freefall. Once it was putting forth a
superior ring product than WWE, now it's worse than WWE despite having
higher level talent and an extra hour. WWE's product has stayed the same
for the most part, WWE may get the best fed award simply cause the
competition is worse, not because it's any better. Then you have WSX which
would had provided an alternate on TV, only that MTV seems to have
forgotten it used to have wrestling on its network and freaked over the
violence, never mind the fact that they already were airing raunchy
programming. And it seemed the scammers and con-artists were working
overtime this year to rob people blind and take advantage of fans and
wrestlers by setting up shows and conventions then running off with the
cash. As for these awards, a lot of people keep saying RSPW is no longer
relevant, and hasn't been for years, because message boards have replaced
newsgroups in general. RSPW could get turnout by going out on these boards
or Myspace and promote participation, but they don't do that (I have
however), and this is why we have been only getting 20-40 people voting in
this thing when it used to be hundreds. And no I don't believe smaller
turnouts produce better results.

HACK-MAN: No tag teams really stood out this year. I guess #1 was as easy
pick in London/Kendrick. MCMG are taking off in TNA, so I went with them
for #2. I was going to leave #3 blank, but I seem to recall Matt&Jeff
having some decent matches even though they weren't together for long.
CRIMEFIGHTER: The best tag teams are all cruiserweight tag teams, and all
produced enjoyable matches all year.

BIGDADDYLOCO: Even tough guy Toby Keith types chant for the 'Rainbow
Haired Warrior' during a beatdown. My second place vote goes to RVD
because the WWE just couldn't bury him deep enough.
CRIMEFIGHTER: As much as people hate John Cena, he always did what he
could to save the day.

HACK-MAN: For Most Improved Wrestler, the top two were easy picks. No one
has improved nearly as much as John Morrison (though I preferred his old
gimmick) and Candice Michelle. For a third pick, it was a toss up among
Elijah Burke, CM Punk, John Cena, and Miz (who was unwatchable in 2006).
CRIMEFIGHTER: You have to admit, John Cena improved a lot this year,
wrestling Shawn Michaels helped a lot.

Most Overrated Wrestler
Award Description:
To be given to the wrestler who really has little talent, but has a large
place in the spotlight nonetheless. This is a measure of how undeserved a
wrestler's push is.

HACK-MAN: It's a sad day when there are three people more overrated than
the Undertaker, but Batista, Bryan Danielson, and Khali all for that
description. As in past years, it's hard to leave out people like Big
Daddy V, Brother Ray, Cody Rhodes, Booker, Monty Brown, Pacman, Orton,
Umaga, and Taker.
BIGDADDYLOCO: It's amazing Kennedy's one trick pony hasn't been sent to
the glue factory yet.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Khali is still overrated like mad, solely cause he's
tallest. Lashley and Orton also are way overrated.

HACK-MAN: This was an unusual year, as there were a lot of good choices
for "Best Wrestling Gimmick". Although I was a big mark for James
Mitchell's gimmick, Jimmy Wang Yang, what Santino evolved into, Backlund's
gimmick (that he lives outside wrestling), therapist Nash, Paparazzi
Productions, and Maria's "stupid" gimmick, I was an even bigger mark for
Cryme Tyme, Chris Jericho inserting viral messages into WWE programming,
and Black Machismo Jay Lethal.
BIGDADDYLOCO: Nobody could have done as much with the King gimmick as
Booker.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Jay Lethal...the modern day Macho Man Randy Savage...

HACK-MAN: I was surprised that I ended up giving all three "Worst Tag
Team" votes to TNA. Ron Killings & Pacman Jones were just awful (and
don't forget to combine the two similar named teams). Kip James doesn't
deserve to be drawing a paycheck in the biz. Devon can't make up for the
awfulness that is Brother Ray in Team 3-D.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Worst team, Pacman wasn't allowed to do anything, and we all
knew he couldn't. Whatta waste.

well. Maybe there was just no heel heat drawn or maybe the fans actually
cheered this person, but for whatever reason the heel image just didn't
get over.

HACK-MAN: I feel bad that I forgot to nominate Rhyno for "Worst Babyface"
(and didn't want to write him in--since I knew he had no chance of winning
if not on the ballot), so I had to go with Batista, Bryan Danielson, and
Hardcore Holly. Cody Rhodes escapes until next year...
BIGDADDYLOCO: Cheering for Kane at this point feels a lot like cheering
for 'Mean' Mike Enos in the waning WCW days.

Khali, Chris Masters, or Pacman Jones. If I had more votes, I'd also vote
for Viscera and Duggan.

0 1 0 3 Brother DeVon
0 0 1 2 Villano III
HACK-MAN: A lot of people seem to just vote for people they don't like in
"Most Deteriorated Wrestler". I see a bunch of people that can't work,
but can't really say that they wrestled all that much better in 2006.
While I'm tempted to go with Benoit, the three that seem to be worse in
2007 than in 2006 ended up being Rey Mysterio, Bryan Danielson, and
Sandman.
BIGDADDYLOCO: Most Deteriorated Wrestler is going to Brother Ray who was
once a solid big man who at least tried to a fat guy who totally stopped
selling, moving or just about anything else in the ring other than taking
up more space.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Rikishi thinks he should command a big-money contract...not
anymore...your stock has fallen...and out of TNA.

HACK-MAN: I wish I had remembered to nominate Daivari for "Most Underrated
Wrestler", since he can do so much more than the crap he did in WWE.
BIGDADDYLOCO: I voted Finlay and Stevie Richards #1 & 2 last year and I
see no reason to change that this year.

WWE.
BIGDADDYLOCO: DX was the gimmick that just wouldn't end/
CRIMEFIGHTER: Chris Masters won't be missed in WWE. Big Vito should stop
wearing dresses, cause it hurt his career. He should had gone to ECW as
part of the FBI.

Worst Wrestling Move
Award Description:
To be given to the move that is the worst thing you've seen this year.
This shouldn't be given to a move that was flubbed by a wrestler - the
move was performed correctly, but was just too stupid for words. This move
should probably be a "finishing" move or something that was meant to be
spectacular.

that St. Louis used to be a hotbed for wrestling with high standards. So
WWE decided to give us St. Louis folk the WORST MATCH OF THE YEAR in fake
Donald (Ace Steel) vs. fake Rosie (Kylie McLean). The fans promptly booed
them out of the building. Thankfully, Vince McMahon had to sit there and
listen to the crowd crap all over it.

0 1 0 3 Batista v. Undertaker
0 0 1 2 Team 3D v. The Steiners
0 0 1 2 Angle v. Samoa Joe
BIGDADDYLOCO: This is one of those that have a lot of good options that
are hard to argue with, but I went with Coach v. Hornswoggle because it
irritates the piss out of me and it isn't funny.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Worst feud...anything with a McMahon in it will
automatically suck, except when a McMahon is losing big to DX. The New Age
Outlaws sure stunk up the place with their dumb feuds.

CRIMEFIGHTER: There is no incident this year that didn't have more of an
immeadiate, wide-reaching and negative impact on professional wrestling
than the Benoit family tradegy, and the ramifications of this sad story
will be felt for years and years to come on this and all other sports as
Congress is gearing up to hold hearings on the rampant steriod use by
athletes and the massive distribution ring that includes BALCO and
Signature Pharmacy. On other fronts, an attempt to get another alternative
wrestling product on TV ended in failure due to MTV's lack of committment.
Plus a significant group that gave us a number of current indy stars GCW
shut down, the Benoit family tradegy ironically was the straw that broke
the camel's back.

HACK-MAN: It's bad when there's no one even CLOSE to being as annoying as
Don West and Mike Tenay. Two guys that aren't supposed to be heels have
more heat than anyone in TNA or WWE. They should teach classes in getting
over as obnoxious personalities.
CRIMEFIGHTER: Vinnie Mac continues to be the most obnoxious figure on TV
today, and I'm tired of watching to him stroke his own ego for the benefit
of no one.

in a limo. That ended with the Benoit tradegy bringing him back on TV.

0 1 1 5 CMLL Guerreros del Ring
0 1 0 3 TNA Xplosion
0 0 1 2 NWA Anarchy TV
0 0 1 2 Memphis Wrestling TV
HACK-MAN: In 2007, three shows were more entertaining than Raw, Smackdown,
or Impact: ECW on SciFi (mainly due to Punk/Morrison feud, RVD, and
Ariel), Wrestling Society X (despite being spot-fu and stupid special
effects, it was actually fun to watch), and NWA Anarchy TV (the few eps I
was able to watch online, since my local station stopped showing it).
CRIMEFIGHTER: If wrestling fans, and MTV itself gave it a chance, WSX
would have gotten popular with wrestling fans. Instead, MTV got all scared
about people emulating the stuff shown on it (as if Jack@$$ wasn't doing
it already) and pulled the plug before all ten episodes aired. Ridicious.
Also sad that a few of those folks on WSX I've seen in person and it
provided an outlet for them to get national exposure and raise their
profile that they wouldn't had gotten otherwise.

0 0 1 2 ROH runs Samoa Joe Farewell Tour alongside Fifth Year Festival
0 0 1 2 ECW gets Big Daddy V
CRIMEFIGHTER: For all the bone-headed things TNA has done this year, at
least they have an actual women's division with actual women wrestlers
instead of fashion models whose wrestling abilities are no better than
backyarders. And locally an independent Wrestling Hall of Fame for those
who wrestled at the Chase in St. Louis was established to honor the greats
that isn't controlled by WWE. ROH getting PPV is a start.

the TNA product has she? Her involvement has helped make TNA SUCK badly.

0 0 1 2 Ms. Brooks v. Eric Young in bikini contest on PPV
CRIMEFIGHTER: The worst match is also the worst angle, though the fake
Rosie/fake Donald thing really is a part of the whole Battle of the
Billionaires storyline and yet another means for Vinnie Mac to stroke his
own ego in front of the cameras when no one wants to see him on
television. Course we hoped him being blown up in the limo would rid us of
his ugly mug, but was not to be. Speaking of bad booking, what in the
world was creative thinking running a month long angle for the #1
contendership for the ECW title only to pull out Big Daddy V to steal it
from Tommy Dreamer and put on a very short and terrible match with CM Punk
on a PPV? Stupid stupid stupid. And lastly the Hornswoggle thing being
McMahon's kid...yeah what did that do for anyone? It was funny for about
five seconds...then the ratings took a dive back to where they were again.
Heck, I thought they were gonna bring back the juniors division when they
put the cruiser belt on him!

CRIMEFIGHTER: Last year WWE won best AND worst org, meaning fans have a
love-hate relationship with it. Alas WWE hasn't really gotten any better,
but TNA has gotten MUCH MUCH worse. Really they've squandered all
opportunities to make gains on WWE with such horrible booking and
production of their TV show--yet have a lot more former WWE guys on
roster.

CRIMEFIGHTER: There's not many wrestling shows on TV, but internet
broadcast shows are increasing in number. Regardless, TNA Impact has
fallen, and fallen down hard. Two hours hasn't helped matters at all, and
no new fans are tuning in to watch it no matter what they put on the
screen. JCW Slam TV is only for those with poor communication skills and
folks who want to see how many times a four-letter word can be used in a
sentence--this could only air over the internet.

CRIMEFIGHTER: It's little wonder WWE decided to give New Years Resolution

0 0 1 2 TNA books Abyss to win NWA title... by DQ
CRIMEFIGHTER: Well, guess the stupid moves keep coming and it's getting
harder and harder to figure out what really did the most damage. The
biggest, most castrophic move in wrestling has to be Dixie Carter's
continued denial of what's killing TNA, the creative team. Dixie claims
Vince Russo doesn't have that much input, I do NOT believe her. The
booking TNA did this year was horrible, and continued claims of "well we
only had an hour to fit in everything" was quickly exposed as BS once they
went to two hours, cause they had even more time to put forth horrible
booking. Like the Chicago Bears refusing to switch out their quarterback
despite everyone saying he's horrible, TNA refuses to switch out their
creative team despite everyone knowing they're horrible. And the ratings
for the show are stuck at 1.0-1.1 and not going anywhere. Signing as many
former WWE talent as possible will not make a difference. Speaking of
creative, why won't they push Samoa Joe to the world title? He was the top
star in TNA and creative have RUINED him. Then there's WWE signing a bunch
of former ECW guys and end up never using any of them on ECW. How stupid
is that? Rather hard to believe Sci-Fi renewed the show at all, cause most
people wouldn't miss the "new" ECW if it got cancelled.
