The only title change of the show saw Razor Ramon regain the IC Title from Diesel when Shawn Michaels' interference backfired. The day before the show in somewhat of a surprise, the Headshrinkers lost the WWF Tag Titles to the team of Diesel & Shawn Michaels. Rumour has it that the Headshrinkers refused to do a PPV job for Bam Bam Bigelow & IRS, the team they were slated to lose the titles to at SummerSlam; the Shrinkers did the house show job, the PPV match had a DQ finish, and talk of the Shrinkers being history has begun. We'll have to wait and see. The PPV was billed as having two main events. The first was a cage match for the WWF Title between brothers Bret Hart and Owen Hart. A somewhat surprising family member in attendance was Davey Boy Smith, supporting Bret. This was surprising not only because he recently worked for the "competition" but because he is also still facing legal trouble in Calgary, Alberta, for assaulting a man in a bar fight. In any case, the post-match angle established the sides for the ongoing feud: Bret & Davey Boy vs. Owen & Jim Neidhart. Even in the weeks before the PPV, TV interviews were passing the heat from Owen to Neidhart, leaving us set for singles matches between Bret and Neidhart as well as the tag matches. Owen Hart will also move into a singles program with Razor Ramon over the IC Title since Diesel has other concerns. Despite the mixed reviews for the cage match at SummerSlam (I didn't order the show, so I have no opinion on the matter), all of the above story line material seems good on paper. The second main even featured the return of Mark Callaway as the Undertaker, facing Ted DiBiase's fake Undertaker (Brian Lee). While there was lots of talk that Vince McMahon had realized that the idea of two Undertakers feuding and then teaming just had no fan support - the second Undertaker character was handled strangely by the company and the approach didn't work -, for some reason this match was still the top of the two advertised main events even though that decision required them to set up and take down the cage for the previous match all during PPV broadcast time. Callaway of course "killed" the imposter. Lee will apparently work a short run for SMW while the WWF brain trust comes up with a new gimmick for him. There is already talk of moving the WWF Title from Bret Hart to the Undertaker through some intermediate heel. - Other WWF programs coming out SummerSlam include the Heavenly Bodies vs. The Smoking Gunns, Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Adam Bomb, and obviously heel Tatanka vs. face Lex Luger. - WCW TV this past weekend aired an office interview with commissioner Nick Bockwinkel where Nick suspended both Ric Flair and Sherri Martel indefinitely for attempting to end the career of Hulk Hogan. It had been expected that they would go full tilt and say that Hogan's career was in jeopardy as a result of the incident at the Clash, but they didn't go that route. This leaves them with an explanation for why Hogan will be part of the European tour. - The Ultimate Fighting Championship III takes place on 09/09/94 at 9pm EST. It is being advertised as the showdown between champion Royce Gracie and grappler Ken Shamrock. The print ad has them in a lockup with their names and "The Champion" and "The Challenger" underneath them. Shamrock is billed as "Japanese Shootfighting Champ." The cable ad is pretty funny. Shamrock talks about losing to Gracie in UFC I, learning a lot since then, and being ready to beat him this time. After a two minute long speech, they cut to Gracie who says, "Some people never learn." - WCW has Fall Brawl in 09/18/94. Tentative line-up includes: - Terry Funk & Bunkhouse Buck & Arn Anderson & Colonel Parker vs. Dusty Rhodes & Dustin Rhodes & Nasty Boys in a War Games match - Sting vs. Guardian Angel vs. Vader in a triangular match - Rick Steamboat vs. Steve Austin for the US Title - Paul Orndorff & Paul Roma vs. Marcus Bagwell & The Patriot for the Tag Titles *- Cactus Jack vs. Kevin Sullivan in a loser leaves WCW match - Steve Regal vs. Johnny B. Badd for the TV Title Badd blew out his ankle in England and there is a little concern about his condition for this show. This past week on WCW TV they announced the War Games match with Meng in Col. Parker's place. - WCW has Halloween Havoc on 10/23/94. Tentative line-up includes: - Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair for the Unified World Title in a cage with Mr. T as special referee and Hogan retiring if he loses - AAA will broadcast a show on live PPV on 11/06/94. - WCW has Clash of Champions XXIX on 11/16/94. - WWF has Survivor Series on 11/23/94. - WCW has Starrcade '94 on 12/27/94. - Awards: I've posted a survey to determine what awards category will be in this year's awards. - Videos: I have posted something about the availability of videos.
