Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling From: hekunze@jeeves.uwaterloo.ca (Herb Kunze) Subject: Wrestling TidBits - 06/16 Message-ID: Sender: news@watdragon.uwaterloo.ca (USENET News System) Organization: University of Waterloo Date: Fri, 17 Jun 1994 01:12:55 GMT Lines: 216 - The WWF has the King of the Ring PPV this Sunday from Baltimore. Announced line-up has: - Bret Hart vs. Diesel for the WWF Title (the IC Title will not be on the line in this match) - Roddy Piper vs. Jerry Lawler - Headshrinkers vs. Yokozuna & Crush for the Tag Titles - an 8-man King of The Ring single elimination tournament, which looks like this: IRS (def. S. Steiner) --\ |----\ Mabel (def. Pierre) --/ \ |----\ Razor Ramon (def. Kwang) --\ / \ |----/ \ Bam Bam Bigelow (def. S. Plugg) --/ \ |-- King! Jeff Jarrett (def. Lex Luger) --\ / |----\ / 1-2-3 Kid (def. Adam Bomb) --/ \ / |----/ Tatanka (def. Crush) --\ / |----/ Owen Hart (def. Doink) --/ Still no word on Owen Hart's knee or Diesel's knee. As early as two weeks ago, though, Diesel was still not working house shows and Owen was working reasonably lousy matches (considering who's involved) with his brother Bret. Maybe they are saving it for when it counts? Bret Hart will have a "family member" in his corner, with the most frequently mentioned names being Jim Neidhart & Davey Boy Smith. I've heard and read several reports that Smith has finally returned to Calgary to clear himself of the assault charges against him and, if that's the case, it probably means that he won't be at the show. The best bet is still Neidhart because it will be a surprise to people that don't know he's returning and because they play up the fact that Neidhart & Hart are really related. Art Donovan, a former Baltimore Colt, is expected to appear at the show. The guy that did the Roddy Piper imitation (which the crowd on RAW seemed to completely ignore) is expected to be worked into the post-match storyline of Piper vs. Lawler. - WCW has a Clash of Champions on WTBS on 06/23/94. Once again, it starts at 8:05pm EST and runs for 2 hours. The tentative line-up includes: - Ric Flair vs. Sting to unify the WCW & WCW International World Titles *- Nasty Boys vs. Kevin Sullivan & Cactus Jack for the WCW Tag Titles - Steve Austin vs. Johnny B. Badd for the US Title - Larry Zbyszko vs. Steve Regal for the TV Title - Terry Funk & Bunkhouse Buck vs. Dustin Rhodes & Arn Anderson *- Guardian Angel vs. Tex Slazenger Hulk Hogan is expected to make his first WCW in-arena appearance for this show, no doubt as an angle that's part of the main event. Ric Flair tapes some interviews in an empty studio with the doors guarded to minimize the number of people who heard the interviews in advance. WCW isn't taping any more TV until after the Clash, so maybe something surprising will happen here. The Tag Title match was advertised as a *normal* wrestling match (instead of a gang fight match, which the wrestlers had talked about in interviews), although they hinted that there could still be some out of the ring action because of who was involved. In all honesty, they couldn't do matches on WTBS like they did at the recent PPVs. Sherri Martel will also appear and announce who she is managing. - The Hulk Hogan press conference on this past weekend's WCW Saturday Night was legitimately live. I had read that it was taped earlier and would be plugged as live, but that report was incorrect. Although I don't really look forward to the Hogan matches (and that's even if he does try to work hard), WCW seems to be promoting things reasonably well so far. The phone line scam, where they said that Hulkamaniacs could let Hogan know if they wanted him to return, was pretty bad, especially after they played it up as having been a deciding factor in Hogan's return. Meltzer reports that some phone line plugs still aired *after* the "Hogan has signed" announcement was made. - As reported several times on the net already, Maxx Payne is history with WCW, with talk being that he'll surface in the WWF. Cactus Jack will leave WCW on 09/04/94 and work indies. - Brian Lee debuted this past week as the Undertaker on WWF Superstars. To add to the confusion over his identity, they dubbed Mark Calaway's voice over Lee's interview. Lee's lips were clearly out of sync with the message. This could be good or bad. If they never mention why he talks with Mark's voice and do the switch at some later time, it's sort of lame. If they are actually using old Undertaker interview clips and show them and then this Undertaker's interview to make the point, they can claim that it was part of Ted DiBiase's scheme to fool everybody. - SMW Fan Week takes place from 08/05/94 to 08/09/94, with lots of events planned over those days. The schedule looks like this: - 08/05 Night of Legends, Knoxville, a Slamboree type card. - 08/06 Fire on the Mountain, Johnson City, annual major show, & luncheon with the babyfaces. - 08/07 Battle of Beckley, Beckley, small house show. - 08/08 TV taping. - 08/09 Barbecue with the heels. - 08/10 Q&A with Jim Cornette, Bodies, Chris Candido & Tammy Fytch. - 08/11 Small wrestling show at county fair. - 08/12 Knox County Knockout, Barbourville, another house show. - 08/13 King of the Mountain, Morristown, annual tourney house show, & Wrestling training class with Tim Horner They are offering two packages, one that runs from 08/05 to 08/09 and the other for all of the days. They've arranged a deal with the same hotel that the wrestlers stay at for single and double rooms, as follows: - 08/05-08/09 - $425 single or $325 per person, double occupancy. - 08/05-08/12 - $595 single or $450 per person, double occupancy. If any regular netters read this and are interested in going, let me know. It may affect my decision. Right now, Curtis & I are both leaning towards going. It would be an added bonus if I was going to meet some of the personalities in the newsgroup, as well. - Meltzer reported on a radio interview with 2 Cold Scorpio that was pretty interesting. To quote, "Scorpio complained about stuck in a tag team with Marcus Bagwell when in WCW, saying that Bagwell was a nice guy who tried hard but `couldn't lace up my boots.'" Later on, "He also said that at this stage that Pez Whatley was a better wrestler than Ric Flair," a statement which Meltzer balked at. Later still, "Scorpio was very vociferous and bitter about his claim that the older wrestlers in WCW were holding the younger wrestlers back, particularly when it comes to them doing hot moves that the older wrestlers can't do. He blamed the office for him not doing hot moves at house shows and praised Steve Austin's work, saying he was being used to carry Brian Pillman." I certainly believe the first part, that older "stars" don't want young guys to show them up. - One of Titan's attorneys wrote a letter into the Observer to clear up any misconceptions we might have about the case against McMahon. His point was clear when he ended with "Thus, as matters now stand, half of the six charges made by the government have been dismissed already." Maybe I'm not being gracious, but I feel like he was trying to say that that's "half down, half to go," with the charges dropping like flies. Meltzer must have felt this too, since he responded with a few subtle refinements of the lawyer's words and the sentence "And while three of the six charges have been stricken, nothing alleged having been done in the indictment was stricken". - WCW Saturday Night on 07/09/94 will be broadcast live. - WCW has The Great American Bash on 07/17/94 from Orlando. Tentative line-up has: - Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan - Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan vs. Paul Orndorff & Paul Roma for the WCW Tag Titles - Steve Austin vs. Rick Steamboat for the US Title - Vader vs. Guardian Angel - Terry Funk & Bunkhouse Buck vs. Dustin Rhodes & Arn Anderson - Videos: I have posted something about the availability of videos.
