I was very busy in the past week with school related things. Plus, I've gotten well enough that I entered the car-buying market and spent a fair bit of time figuring out what I wanted to buy. Luckily, my gross revenue from all of my wrestling related ventures is $1.7 billion, so the car won't be a problem. ;-) } - Please pardon the perhaps unnecessary verbosity in the following story. There are two reasons for relaying this onto everybody. Last night after dinner, Karen and I were watching some news on TV and the cable died. We figured it would come back eventually and went on to watch something on video. The phone rang. It was a cable company rep asking to talk to Karen (the cable account is in her name, so this made sense). I figured it had to do with cable being dead. Karen took the phone and I stopped the video, noting that the cable was alive again. The following is what I heard from Karen: "Yes. That's right." Pause. "Hmmm. Hmmm." Pause. "Okay, I'll order WrestleMania on April 4th at 7:00pm." Pause. A loud bang echoes through our apartment as my jaw hits the floor. "Thanks. Okay, bye." After I woke up from the shock-induced sleeper, I got the details of the conversation. Apparently, the cable company is going to call everybody in the region who has ever ordered a WWF PPV and ask if they'll order WrestleMania IX at that instant. If you say yes, you get your name entered in a draw to win an official WWF T-shirt or watch. Karen figured that I'd probably order it anyhow, since Gary, Curtis and I got together last year for the show, so she ordered it. Unfortunately for her, the only T-shirts she'd be interested in are of Ric Flair or Rick Steamboat. ;-) With my luck, I'll end up winning a Doink T-shirt! Maybe if I deface it appropriately, I can wear it. ;-) Anyhow, I guess the WWF is aggressively marketing this PPV since they anticipate a dreadful buy since there's no real interest in anything on the show. In my mind, this lends even more credence to the idea that the PPV slot reserved for the WWF on Monday, April 12th, is a follow-up PPV. By hooking in casual fans who might have ordered WrestleMania otherwise, they increase the potential audience for a follow-up PPV, since the casual fans will want to see whatever wrong occurs get righted. - WWF has WrestleMania on 04/04/93 at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. The tentative line-up looks like this: - Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna for the WWF Title - Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake vs. Money, Inc. for the WWF Tag Titles - Steiners vs. Headshrinkers - Tatanka vs. Shawn Michaels for the IC Title - Giant Gonzales vs. Undertaker - Curt Hennig vs. Lex Luger - Crush vs. Doink the Clown *- Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Kamala - Bob Backlund vs. Razor Ramon - Jerry Lawler vs. Genichiro Tenryu There is lots of talk that the final match on this list will not take place. The pre-WrestleMania show on USA on March 28th has Randy Savage vs. Yokozuna and Bret Hart vs. Lex Luger. - Looks like the new guys in charge of WCW are embarking a big North American tour. They'll be going to a lot of "foreign" ground, hitting New York on April 14th and Toronto on the 18th. It's weird seeing localized interviews on WCW syndies. This past week they announced the following things for Toronto: - Steve Regal vs. Maxx Payne - Ric Flair will appear Tentative other matches: - Sting vs. Van Vader for the WCW Title - Barry Windham vs. Ron Simmons for the NWA Title - Brian PIllman & Steve Austin vs. Ricky Steamboat & Steve Austin for the WCW Tag Titles - Cactus Jack & Dustin Rhodes vs. Paul Orndorff & Rick Rude - Marcus Bagwell & 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Tex Slazenger & Shanghi Pierce - Van Hammer vs. Vinnie Vegas - Chris Benoit vs. Johnny B. Badd Ric Flair gave a great interview about his (recent WWF) history with Toronto. - E-mail TidBits: If your site has a slow feed or you don't read news frequently enough and you want to get this posting as e-mail every week, send me e-mail saying so. - Videos: The video discussion continues at a slow rate. I think we are moving towards a solid idea now, though. If you want to be part of any decision-making process (which might well soon begin), now's the time to subscribe to the rspwtape mailing list. For info, send e-mail with a body consisting solely of the word "help" to Majordomo@cc.gatech.edu. That id handles subscription and unsubscription requests among other administrivia. The list id is rspwtape@cc.gatech.edu. Mail sent to this id will be sent to all current subscribers. Please be careful not to send any administrative requests to the mailing list idea. I screwed the ids up a bit last week. Sorry again to anybody who got confused by this. Herb...
