The show will feature the final rounds of the NWA Tag Team Title tournament, with the following structure: Steve Williams & Terry Gordy (4) --\ |--\ Jushin Riger & Brian Pillman \ | | |--/ | Rick Steamboat & Nikita Koloff / | |-- NWA Tag Titles Hiroshi Hase & Akira Nogami (2) \ | |--\ | The Freebirds / | | |--/ Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham \ | |--/ Rick Rude & Steve Austin (6) / where (#) gives the seeding of that team. The only other announced match for the show is: - Sting vs. Big Van Vader for the WCW Title - I was on the phone for nearly three-quarters of an hour with a service representative from my cable company to determine what the story was with regards the Great American Bash PPV apparently not being picked up. It took several minutes just to convince her that I wasn't a stereotypical moronic pro-wrestling fan. At this point, she pulled out the PPV sheets for the future and told me that they'd already committed to carrying SummerSlam, Survivor Series, and Royal Rumble. Does anybody see a pattern? Yep, she said that the buy rate for previous WCW events has been very low and that that was the reason that the Bash wasn't picked up. She did have the Coastal Crush PPV (Sept. 13) and Halloween Havoc down as tentative WCW events. I believe that Bill Watts has already killed Coastal Crush and informed her of this. It would seem that the future of WCW PPV events on cable in Canada is in jeopardy just one year after we entered the PPV universe. - The WWF has it's SummerSlam PPV scheduled for August 31st (to be taped at Wembley Stadium in London, England, on August 29th). The following partial line-up has been announced: - Randy Savage vs. Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Title - Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith for the IC Title - Money Inc. vs. Legion of Doom for the WWF Tag Titles - Undertaker vs. Kamala - Beverly Brothers vs. Natural Disasters - Tatanka vs. Berzerker - Crush vs. Repo-Man No, Bill Eadie isn't going to be the referee for the last match. - The NWA World Championship Tournament, to be held in Japan in early August, will involve Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Rick Steiner, Scott Steiner, Barry Windham, Ron Simmons, Great Muta, Big Van Vader, Bam Bam Bigelow, Hiro Hase, Kensuke Sasaki, Masa Chono, Shinya Hashimoto, Scott Norton, and Tony Halme. - It's hard to keep up with the title picture in WCW these days. Scotty Flamingo defeated Brian Pillman on June 20th to win the WCW Lightheavyweight Title at Beach Blast and then lost it to Brad Armstrong in the Omni on July 5th. The Steiners won the IWGP Tag Titles from Big Van Vader & Bam Bam Bigelow (with Bigelow getting pinned by Rick) on June 26th in Budokan Hall in Tokyo, but lost the WCW Tag Titles to Terry Gordy & Steve Williams in the Omni on July 5th. Gordy & Williams also seem to be the apparent winners of the NWA Tag Titles on July 12th at the Great American Bash. The Freebirds won the US Tag Titles from Terry Taylor & Greg Valentine on May 17th at WrestleWar and lost them at a WCW taping on June 25th to Dick Slater & The Barbarian in a match that will air this weekend on WCW Main Event. - Bill Watts seems to have done something that should make up for the introduction of the new rules in WCW. On WCW Saturday this past weekend, Michael Hayes jobbed cleanly for Steve Austin and Jimmy Garvin jobbed cleanly for Rick Rude. This coming weekend on WCW Saturday Night, Bobby Eaton pins Michael Hayes and Super Invader pins Jimmy Garvin and on WCW Main Event the Freebirds drop the US Titles to Dick Slater in a squash match. Hallelujah! It looks like the Freebirds are history. I'm ecstatic. - Dan Spivey is going to be pushed as a contender for Sting's WCW World Title. - Videotape: I've sent out notices to the second batch of video requesters. If you don't know what I'm talking about with this "videotape" stuff, send me e-mail and I'll clue you in. I won't be posting all the gruesome details yet again. Herb...
