From: hekunze@watmsg.waterloo.edu (Herb Kunze) Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling Subject: Wrestling TidBits - 06/27 Message-ID: <1991Jun27.151303.15631@watmath.waterloo.edu> Date: 27 Jun 91 15:13:03 GMT Sender: news@watmath.waterloo.edu (News Owner) Organization: University of Waterloo Lines: 154 - The WWF acknowledged the trial of George Zahorian and the link to the organization in a press release that says that none of their wrestlers have done anything illegal. The wrestlers weren't mentioned by name. Hulk Hogan's lawyer has ensured that his client will not be made to testify at the trial, and the Hulkster, upset about the rampant allegations, has pulled himself from several cards in the past few days. He will not wrestle until his name is cleared, he says. Yesterday in the Harrisburg courtroom, Dr. Zahorian admitted that he did in fact supply anabolic steroids to Hulk Hogan and several other wrestlers (Dan Spivey, Roddy Piper, Rick Martel, Brian Blair). He went even further by saying that the anabolics were provided to help enhance performance, not for medical treatment. Weeping on the stand, Zahorian told the court that Hulk Hogan once had a serious problem with steroids and that he (Zahorian) helped get Hogan off the drug. He claimed Hogan has been clean for several years. Earlier in the week, Rick Martel, Roddy Piper, Dan Spivey, and Brian Blair all admitted that they bought steroids from the doctor. They won't be charged with anything because steroid use was legal at the time. - Scott Steiner suffered a bicep tear last week and will be out for two months. - The line-up for the WCW Bash PPV on July 14th is: - Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger for the WCW Title in a cage match - Sting vs. Nikita Koloff in a chain match - Steiners & Missy Hyatt vs. Arn Anderson, Barry Winhdam, & Paul E. Dangerously in a cage match - Freebirds vs. Dustin Rhodes & Young Pistols in an elimination match - Steve Austin & Terry Taylor vs. Bobby Eaton & P.N. News in a scaffold match - Black Blood vs. Big Josh in a lumberjack match - Yellow Dog vs. Johnny B. Badd - One Man Gang vs. El Gigante - Tom Zenk vs. Diamond Studd - Ricky Morton vs. Robert Gibson - Ron Simmons vs. Oz This line-up may well change, since Scott Steiner can't work his match. At a recent taping Big Josh rescued Rick Steiner from an ambush by Dick Slater & Dick Murdoch, so perhaps we'll see the Josh match change and Josh join the Steiner match. I'll wait until next week before posting the call for predictions. Hopefully the line-up will have settled by then. Looking at the line-up, one must be a little distressed that WCW is relying so heavily on gimmick matches on top. This implies that they realize that they have no standard match that can draw a crowd and are hoping for the gimmicks to sell the show. - Everybody is saying that the headline match at SummerSlam will be Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior vs. Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa, & General Adnon with Sid Justice as the referee. I'm hearing conflicting reports that the line-up will in fact be: Hulk Hogan vs. Sgt. Slaughter in a Desert Storm match (to blow-off their feud), Nasty Boys vs. Legion Of Doom for the tag belts in a 2-out-of-3 falls match, Sid Justice. vs Curt Hennig for the IC belt, Big Boss Man vs. The Mountie in a stick match, Roddy Piper & Virgil vs. Ted DiBiase & Sherri, Earthquake & Typhoon vs. Jake Roberts & Andre, Ultimate Warrior vs. Undertaker. We'll have to wait and see what happens. The wedding of Randy Savage and Elizabeth (already married for seven years) will also take place on the card. As someone guessed, Lanny Poffo will return for the wedding. He'll be Randy's best man! Could the WWF actually recognize their relationship? Sherri Martel will be the maid of honour. No doubt Sherri will somehow cause a disruption and be joined by Ted DiBiase to set up his feud with Savage. We'll see the film of the proposal on one of the upcoming weekends. When asked to marry Randy, Elizabeth responded "Ooooooh Yeeeaahhh!" Rumours have Bad News Brown returning from Japan to take on the Barbarian on the card. And Dr. Death Steve Williams will debut as well. - After SummerSlam, Steve Williams will join forces with the Undertaker and be managed by Paul Bearer. - Probably at SummerSlam, and certainly after the event, Virgil will start wearing a dress and make-up and calling himself Virgilina. I didn't make this one up. Honest. - Also after SummerSlam, Hulk Hogan will begin a new program with The Warlord. Guaranteed ***** matches here. - WCW ran an angle where Kevin Sullivan & One Man Gang cut off some of El Gigante's hair. Sounds like the angle that the WWF ran with Andre, Ken Patera, and King Kong Bundy years back. This should set up the Gigante-Gang feud. Also, they are going to start a feud between Tom Zenk and the Diamond Studd - wait! I thought Tom Zenk *was* the Diamond Studd and Steve DiSalvo was Tom Zenk! ;-) - to determine who the real stud is. - As mentioned last week, the WWF struck a deal with IWCCW to have it's wrestlers work there. The first batch of wrestlers to work in IWCCW are Tito Santana (before being recycled), The Sheepwhackers, and Koko Ware. - There's talk of either releasing the World Bodybuilding Federation championship directly to video, or perhaps airing it as a cheap hot ticket PPV first. - As reported by another Canadian earlier this week, the RCMP is upset at the characterization of the Mountie in the WWF. They are fighting quite hard to get the gimmick killed. I'd expect that the Mountie will meet a quick demise at the hand of the Big Boss Man and Jacques Rougeau will get recycled. I even saw a news story on this on CBC Newsworld, a Canadian national cable news channel. - Haku is getting over big in Japan, working a pretty much permanent SWS tour. - There is talk of Bob Backlund working a match against Terry Funk on the US indy circuit. - It's expected that the Randy Savage vs. Ted DiBiase feud will somehow involve another heel wrestler after a while and that Savage will once again join forces with Hulk Hogan to take on the heel combo. - The same night as the Clash of Champions here in North America, Jushin Riger recaptured the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title in Bodukan Hall. I guess this ends my personal hopes of Riger coming into WCW in the near future. - There is some distress in the New Japan group about their wrestlers coming over for WCW spot shows and doing jobs. Stars like Keiji Muto, Masa Chono, and Hiro Hase are really over in Japan and there is a fear that word will leak back of them doing jobs in the US. It's okay for Hase & Chono or Hase & Kensuke Sasaki to lose to the Steiners, because the Steiners are amazingly over in Japan too. But Muto shouldn't be losing to Lex Luger or Sting every time he appears (he was pinned by Sting around CoC time in St. Louis, and, incidently, Hase did another job for the Steiners too). I hope this doesn't end a relationship which I selfishly want to grow. - Didn't see The Beverly Brothers debut on the weekend, but was told it was pretty bland. The gay gimmick is not apparent I'm also told, but with names like Blake and Beau, and a home town of Beverly Hills, I'm sure it will work it's way in. Herb... P.S. I'm heading to Montreal for the long weekend and won't be back on the net until next Wednesday. This is an advance apology for the delay in responding to any posts or e-mail. As always, comments, criticisms, and questions are encouraged and appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Herb Kunze : "Whether you like it or you don't like it, Applied Math Department : learn to live with it, 'cause University of Waterloo : it's the best thing going today! hekunze@watmsg.waterloo.edu : Woooooooh!" hekunze@violet.waterloo.edu : - Ric 'Nature Boy' Flair
