We'll get to see how bad their gay gimmick is, and how useful John Tolos is as a manager. - Interesting rumour has Brian Pillman jumping to the WWF. He has missed some WCW dates recently. - Dusty Rhodes will not be appearing in front of WCW cameras in the future. He'll be strictly the behind-the-scenes booker. There's no need to avoid WCW PPVs over commentator fears in the future. - There's talk from Terry Funk about returning to WCW as a wrestler. I wasn't aware that he had recovered from his back injury to the point where he's ready to enter the ring again. - Also, rumours continue that Brother Love will join WCW as a manager. - Highlights of Herb Abram's UWF "Beach Brawl" PPV had Johnny Ace and Terry Gordy going to a double countout, Bob Backlund pinning Ivan Koloff, Paul Orndorff pinning Colonel DeBeers, Steve Ray & Sonny Beach beating Cactus Jack & Bob Orton, and Steve Williams becoming the first UWF champion when he pinned Bam Bam Bigelow. - The WWF has struck a deal with IWCCW to have some it's (the WWF's) wrestlers work in the smaller area in intervals. - I shouldn't have been so final in dismissing the idea of a Jr. Heavyweight divison in WCW. The idea has really only been postponed. - Summer Slam will be subtitled "A Match Made In Heaven And A Match Made In Hell." This past weekend's syndies had Vince McMahon asking Randy Savage whether he and Elizabeth were as close to "tying the knot" as rumours that Vince had heard were suggesting. Randy stammered around a bit and I forget his exact response. In any case, the marriage of Elizabeth and Randy Savage in the ring is almost certainly going to be the "Match Made In Heaven". I'm led to believe that the "Match Made In Hell" will be Hulk Hogan vs. The Undertaker. It's expected that Ted DiBiase will interrupt the wedding of Randy of Liz to set up his feud with Randy Savage. Also, Sid Justice will make his debut at the event, facing Curt Hennig in an Intercontinental Title match. The event takes place on August 26th from Madison Square Garden. That leaves them with 2 months to try to book their best bump taker against their biggest stiff in a convincing manner. - Rick Rude is rumoured to be on his way to All Japan Pro-wrestling. - On TSN's Power Hour in Canada, they did a segment to build up the Steiners as indomitable. I don't know if the same segment will be shown in the US. Anyhow, Missy, Paul E., and Jim Ross introduced the segment, with Jim leading the discussion. Jim mentioned that the Steiners fought the Nasty Boys at Halloween Havoc '90, that the Nasty Boys were thought to be a tough team but ended up getting whipped by the Steiners, and that the Nasty Boys are now wrestling elsewhere. They showed a fair portion of the match. Afterwards, Jim asked whether the beating that the Nasty Boys incurred was the reason they left WCW - Missy said sure, Paul gave an unconvincing no. Jim asked Paul whether he knew were the Nasty Boys were hiding at the moment and Paul said he had no idea where the Nasty Boys were. It was somewhat amusing. - The first steroid related court case in the US that has direct links to pro-wrestling begins next week. The trial of Dr. George Zahorian III, an osteopath and urologic surgeon, will begin next Monday in US district court. He was indicted early this year on 10 counts of distribution or intending to distribute steroids, 5 counts of distributing other controlled substances, and 2 counts of using his offices to distribute drugs. The first two charges carry potential prison sentences of three and five years, respectively, per charge. You might remember George if you watched the WWWF (probably) pre-1980. He was used several times in medically related angles. The indictment and other court documents refer to the wrestlers that George supplied as John M. Doe, John B. Doe, John S. Doe, John P. Doe, and John H. Doe. The claim is that George supplied anabolic steroids to these wrestlers several times between November 18, 1988, and March 27, 1990. The wrestlers will not be charged with anything because at the time steroid use was not a federal crime. They will, however, be asked to testify (I can't figure out how to spell "subpoenaed" ;-)). This is the problem, at least for Vince McMahon. Vince can't afford to have his wrestlers linked to the scandal, unless they are wrestlers he can kill off immediately. And here's the rub. It was leaked in separate interviews by three different people involved in the case just who the above anonymous wrestlers are. The initials are actually the intials to the wrestlers' last names. The five wrestlers are Rick Martel ("M"), Brian Blair ("B"), Dan Spivey ("S"), Roddy Piper ("P"), and you guessed it, Hulk Hogan ("H"). The assistant US attorney Theodore Smith III and George Zahorian have both refused to comment on the validity of the leaked names. The same three inside sources claim that the shroud of silence being kept over the names is due to the crazed negotiations of Vince McMahon, who doesn't want, in particular, Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan linked to this mess. Two sources said Hogan's lawyer, Jerry McDevvit, made the request to US middle district judge William Caldwell in a sealed motion. McDevvit, the apparently named wrestlers, and WWF spokesman Steve Planamenta are all not returning calls on this matter. Can't wait until Monday. Herb... As always, comments, criticisms, and questions are encouraged and appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Herb Kunze : "Whether you like it or you don't like it, Applied Math Department : learn to live with it, 'cause University of Waterloo : it's the best thing going today! hekunze@watmsg.waterloo.edu : Woooooooh!" hekunze@violet.waterloo.edu : - Ric 'Nature Boy' Flair
