I'll leave it for somebody else to do a fuller review. I'll try to name the endings and highlights from memory. We'll see how it goes. Matches are not in the order they occurred. - Ric Flair vs. Bobby Eaton for the WCW Title (2 out of 3 falls) By the time we reached this match in the program, there were only 20 minutes left. At this point it seemed like they'd go for a time limit expiration ending on one of the falls. Bobby got the first fall with the Alabama Jam. Ric took the second fall by countout, when Bobby injured his knee taking a bump from the top rope to the floor. Ric took the deciding fall when Bobby gave up while in the figure-four. - Lex Luger vs. Great Muta Muta was great. He missed a handspring elbow when Luger moved out of the corner - Muta ended up flying backwards over the top rope and somehow managed to do a somersault and land basically on his feet. This was amazing considering the ramp, the stairs, and the guard rail were all in that spot. Muta tried to mist Luger, but Lex got his arm up. Lex scored the pin with a powerslam, I think. - Arn Anderson & Barry Windham vs. El Gigante & Brian Pillman This was a loser must leave WCW match, meaning that whoever gets pinned must leave. I hoped that El Gigante would have a seizure and the ending would have to be changed. The ending spot had Pillman on the top rope ready to leap, with the referee pushing Gigante out of the ring. AA knocked Pillman off the top rope and Barry scored the pin. Brian must leave WCW - see below for more. - Sting vs. Nikita Koloff Sting got pounded on in a serious way. They are trying to re-establish Nikita as a monster heel like he was several years ago. Sting managed to sneak a school-boy on Nikita when Nikita missed the Russian Sickle and ran in the turnbuckle. - Steiners vs. Hiro Hase & Masa Chono for the IWGP Tag Title This was the Steiners second IWGP title defense (first was on May 31st in Osaka against Hase & Sasaki on Fujinami's 20th anniversary card) and the first defense of a Japanese belt on North American soil (so said Jim Ross). Hase was phenomenal. I was a little confused because Scott and Chono both seemed to work as heels. I guess it's supposed to be rivalry or something. In the end, Scott nailed Hase with a Frankensteiner while all four guys were scuffling and got the pin. Rick's headgear broke after a kick by Masa Chono mid-match. After the match, the Hardline Collection Agency hit the ring and did a number on Rick Steiner. - Young Pistols & Tom Zenk vs. Three Freebirds They've renamed Brad Armstrong's character "Bad Street." The Pistols are trying to incorporate some Lucha Libre style moves into their arsenal. They work hard, but I still don't like them. The stupid finish saw all three faces get sunset flips on the heels and the referee count one on each heel to give the three count. - Dustin Rhodes vs. Terrence Taylor Dustin managed to nail the bulldog on Terry. Hughes got up on the apron and distracted the referee, with Dustin coming over to argue with him too. In the end, Hughes hit Dustin giving him the DQ win. Suddenly Ricky Morton hits the ring and stands there for a second before nailing Dustin. The heel turn is official. I think Big Jerk made the save. - Big Josh vs. Dan Spivey Spivey got the win with a German suplex. Spivey did a Japanese arm drag, which was nice to see. Kevin Sullivan came to ringside and blindsided Josh with a gimmicked crutch to set up the pin. - Johnny Rich vs. Oz Welcome to Oz! Welcome to Oz! The match went under two minutes but that was several minutes too long. Oz with the Al Perez slam. - Steve Austin vs. Joey Maggs Steve Austin won with the stun gun. I blinked and missed exactly what the stun gun was. Steve has a rather vo"lump"tuous valet. - Tommy Rich vs. Diamond Studd The Studd (spelled with two d's on his intro, but one d on his butt) beat Tommy with the DDD, the Diamond Death Drop, basically a hangman into a modified power bomb type slam. They also had some strange segments during the show. P.N.News came out with legit rap personalities Salt & Pepa and acted really stoopid. Johnny B. Badd came out and insulted News, who then challenged Badd, who left the ring. The highlight of the show was Muta's missed handspring elbow. Also of importance, they did a skit with Alexandra York introducing Richard Morton, her newest associate. While Ricky was talking, Robert Gibson strolled into the ring and questioned his judgement. They teased Ricky turning face again when he stopped Hughes and Terry from advancing on Robert saying "That's not in my contract!" Then out of nowhere, Ricky nailed Robert with a punch and gave him a piledriver that Robert sold like someone who's been away from the sport and dying to get back. It was a great spot. I went to see the show with Gary Will and whenever they showed a masked wrestler ("Bad Street," a clip of "Black Blood") we yelled "It's Scott Hall! No, it's Steve DiSalvo!" Thanks to the folks who maintained that Diamond Studd was not Scott Hall but Steve DiSalvo for this piece of entertainment. Are there still any doubters? - As you may have noticed, the clips they showed during the CoC of WCW wrestlers were ahead of their time. One clip had Morton already working as a heel. The other had Stunning Steve Austin coming to the ring with a belt around his waist. At a taping last week, Steve won the TV title from Bobby Eaton. Bobby and Steve are lined up for a program. - Brian Pillman, who has to leave WCW, will be returning as The Yellow Dog, working under a hood and feuding with Barry Windham. Nice touch for the hardcores who will remember when Windham worked as the Dirty Yellow Dog years back. Maybe we were supposed see this coming since Pillman has dressed up as a chicken, a gorilla and a rat in the past few weeks and attacked Windham. - WCW scrapped the plans for the junior heavyweight division. - More WCW news has the Freebirds winning the 6-man titles from the team of Junkfood Dog & Tommy Rich. Ricky Morton bailed out on his partners now that he's turned. I guess this means that the US belts will be dropped to the Young Pistols in the near future. - Scott Putski and Sweet Brown Sugar worked a recent WWF taping. - Vince is going to use Andre the Giant's knee as an angle. Earthquake clipped Andre's knee and pummelled him a bit on one of the syndies a little while ago. Andre's going to "have surgery" and then return to fight EQ and Typhoon alongside Jake Roberts. - Hawk is out with a hernia. Any LOD tag matches will become Animal single matches, although the change won't be advertised. There was some talk about bringing in Animal's brother, Marc Laurinidas, best known as The Terminator, but they decided against it. - Fans of the Destruction Crew, who will be working as the Beverly Bombers managed by Coach John Tolos in the WWF, will be glad to know that they will be working a gay gimmick. Tolos will be introduced this weekend on TV by Curt Hennig, the only Heenan family member that Tolos will take on. - Sid Vicious worked at the WWF tapings in Tucson and Tempe. At Tucson he entered the ring when Da Mountie challenged anybody to face him. Sid whipped him. At Tempe, Earthquake made a similar challenge and Sid came down and bodyslammed him. The crowd was chanting "Sid, Sid, Sid!" during the match, so Vince has to keep that as his first name. Sid Justice is the name that everybody's throwing around for him, but nothing's definite until they do the voice-overs for the taping. The only thing that is definite is that Sid will be a face. With a Hulk Hogan - Undertaker feud planned for the tail-end of the year, that means there are no new heels and no old charismatic heels that Hogan can face at WrestleMania. This is leading to speculation of a Hogan - Ultimate Warrior rematch at WrestleMania, after a Warrior heel turn. With the plan being that Randy Savage be pushed to number two face status, with Hogan being number one, that would have made UW face number three. If Sid continues to get over, UW would be face number four at best. Who'd want to see face number one meet face number four? UW's gotta turn and become heel number one. - This has nothing to do with nepotism, but Dustin Rhodes is slated to have a program with Ric Flair come September. - Somebody posted that Sting was unhappy with his contract and was threatening to follow Sid Vicious to the WWF. It isn't going to happen. Sting's salary was adjusted to $700000 a year earlier this week and he's a happy camper again. - Wrester Lance Idol - real name Steve Schumann - who also worked as Steve Winters and Ray Evans suffered a heart attack in the ring in a match in Clear Lake, California. - I watched a tape of the SuperBrawl PPV on the weekend. The work was quite good. The Steiners vs. Sting & Luger has the potential to be the match of the year. Certainly, it was the best North American match I've seen, followed closely by the War Games from Phoenix. - I'll try to score the Clash of Champions predictions before the weekend. Worst case scenario would have me posting the results on Sunday, I think. Herb...
