I first heard about the accident on July 7, at which time I had very few details. The story then went something like: "Beefcake, who resides in San Francisco, accompanied a few few friends on a boating trip. Unfortunately, the Beefer suffered some facial injuries that required immediate attention." Since then, I have heard similar reports to what has been posted to the net, that is that Beefcake suffered a severe skull injury. Not surprisingly, he will be sidelined indefinitely. Of course, this bodes trouble for Uncle Vince. Already working around one drawing card - Warrior vs. Rick Rude - being shelved, he's now faced with one of his other summer programs getting the axe. I don't know who will replace Beefcake around the country in the Beefcake vs. Hennig matches; but, this past weekend in Toronto we had Hennig vs. Santana instead. Will Vince announce the accident? I say probably only because Beefcake is a face and old friends with Hogan. - The rumours are starting again. Actually they started before Ric Flair even lost his title on Saturday evening. You know the rumours: Ric Flair is going to quit the NWA and join the WWF. We'll have to wait and see what becomes of Slick Ric. The official word from NWA publicity officer Barry Norman is that Flair is going nowhere: "Flair recently signed a two-year contract with the organization and he seems extremely happy. We have no idea what his next plan is, now that he has lost the title, but I expect to see Sting give him a shot at the title." Yet the latest scuttlebutt has Ric leaving the NWA shortly after Halloween Havoc II. An anonymous "close friend" of Ric was reported to have said that Ric "had beaten the best the NWA had to offer and felt if he was to be considered the best grappler ever, he would have to join the WWF and beat the likes of the Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan. Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson did the same as a tag team. They joined the WWF and proved they were the best before jumping ship again." I have one worse thought than a Ric Flair vs. Buddy Landell feud that actually seems possible. What do you all think of the possibility of the Horsemen losing a member, say Windham, and Buddy Landell joining the Horsemen. Then Arn and Sid would be the dominant single Horsemen and Buddy and Ric would take the tag straps. Yup, The Nature Boys, the new NWA world tag team champs. Scary thought. - With the success of the big wrestling events in the past few years, it was really only a matter of time before Hollywood took hold of the idea. First there was "No Holds Barred," understandable since it was funded by Vince. But on August 30, Paramount is scheduled to release "American Angels - Baptism of Blood," a female wrestling movie. The young ladies in this 99-minute "Rocky-like" flick include members of the American Angels wrestling team, whoever they are. I know I can't wait. - Leon Spinks, conqueror of Muhammad Ali, took on former United States Wrestling Association Champion Jerry Lawler in a boxing-wrestling match at Memphis on the weekend. In the fifth round of what was apparently an incredibly boring match, the USWA champion (at least in Memphis ;-)), The Snowman, a good friend of Leon, got involved and Lawler was awarded the victory because of outside interference. Spinks was special referee two weeks ago in the Lawler-Snowman championship match and decked Lawler, aiding Snowman in getting the win. - Cactus Jack Manson, apparently having quit his job after Ole Anderson decided to job him out since his bumps were too crazy, is working the independents. He fights Austin Idol in New York on Saturday. Herb... As always, comments, criticisms, and questions are encouraged and appreciated. *********************************************************************** * Herb Kunze * "Whether you like it or not, * * Applied Math Department * learn to live with it, 'cause * * University of Waterloo * I'm the best thing going today!" * * hekunze@watmsg.waterloo.edu * - Ric 'Nature Boy' Flair * * hekunze@water.waterloo.edu * * ***********************************************************************
