Gosh, Buster blew his two jobs for the evening. First, he gives a lightning quick count, and then fouls up his punch at Randy Savage. In typical WWF form, this show revealed nothing new about the main event at WrestleMania VI. All in all, I was quite disappointed with the show - this is saying a lot, since I wasn't expecting much to begin with. Other results from this night were: - Earthquake pinned Ronnie Garvin - Dusty Rhodes pinned Curt Hennig (!) - Ted DiBiase over Jake Roberts by countout - Andre & Haku pinned Demolition - Rick Martel pinned Brutus Beefcake - Ultimate Warrior pinned Dino Bravo - Hulk Hogan held court for the media prior to his match on Friday and was asked to respond to the rumour that he was leaving wrestling to star in a new Walt Disney film. The Hulkster's response: "I'm not interested in Holly-weird. I'm not about to body slam Donald Duck or drop the leg drop on Jiminy Cricket." - Some new matches were signed this week for WrestleMania VI. These super-exciting matches (he said sarcastically...) are: - Jimmy Snuka vs. Rick Rude - Jim Duggan vs. Dino Bravo - Tito Santana vs. Barbarian This last match might reflect a shake-up in the Powers of Pain who have really gone nowhere since arriving in the WWF quite a while ago. - It's been announced by WWF paper president Jack Tunney that both the WWF World belt and the WWF IC belt will be on the line in the main event of WrestleMania VI. I guess the winner decides which one of the belts to keep. Assuming a definite winner, this would mean that a tournament to crown a new IC champ is in the offing after WM (Can you say PPV?) By the way, it's expected that all 66000 seats at the Skydome will be sold out within the next two weeks. - Re: NWA shake-up. As I mentioned last week, Steve Williams and the Great Muta have taken some time off from the NWA to compete in Japan. Rumours are strong that they have actually left the organization. Also rumoured to be on the way out are the Dynamic Dudes (hurray!) and the Skyscrapers. With Sid Vicious not due back until the end of April and Danny Spivey out, there really isn't much left of the Skyscrapers to get rid of. Teddy Long's alliance with Doom seems to support that the Scrapers are a thing of the past. - It looks like the CNWA (Canadian National Wrestling Association) is really starting to heat up. My understanding is that the CNWA is the upper level organization under which several of the smaller Canadian leagues will fall. Our national sports network, TSN, has been broadcasting WFWA wrestling from Winnipeg ever since the closure of Stampede Wrestling in Calgary. The WFWA wrestling was not that great - top stars were Ken Patera, Baron von Raschke, Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie, and Scott Norton. Wondering about the CNWA, which they had mentioned in passing on the WFWA show in the past, I tuned in to the TSN wrestling show this week. As it turns out, WFWA commentators Joe Aiello and Bulldog Bob Brown were broadcasting under the CNWA logo out of Calgary this week. The show featured many of Stampede's former personalities: The Great Gama, Steve DiSalvo, The Angel of Death, Randy Thatcher, Skull Mason, Goldie Rogers, etc. It was also announced that Ed Whalen, the announcer for Stampede Wrestling for the past 20+ years, would be joining the crew on this broadcast. The main event saw Steve DiSalvo take on the Angel of Death, with former Stampede bad-guy referee Jurgen Hermann. The match ended when DiSalvo, who had controlled most of the bout, had the Angel of Death in a full nelson. The referee had been knocked down, so Bob Brown left the commentator's table, entered the ring and nailed DiSalvo. All hell broke loose and things ended in a double disqualification. There's a re-match scheduled for next week. They are organizing a tournament to crown the various CNWA champions - both single and tag; it also sounded like they might have two weight classes of competition (much like Stampede), with 225 pounds being the seperating weight. The big Stampede names were mentioned in passing in reference to the tournament. These include: Larry Cameron, Davey Boy Smith, Owen Hart, Bruce Hart, Gama Singh, Angel of Death, Steve DiSalvo, etc. This could get very interesting - I'll keep you informed on developments. - I'm pretty impressed with the talent roster in the ICW right now. We have champion Tony Atlas, followed by contenders Tom Pritchard, Ricky Steamboat, Bob Orton, Austin Idol, and Paul Orndorff. Rumoured to be coming to the ICW is Don Muraco. I'd really like to see some of their action. - There's a big card in Tokyo on March 6th. Featured matches are Jumbo Tsuruta (*the man* in Japan right now) taking on Barry Windham and Genichiro Tenryu & Toshiaki Kawada taking on Terry Gordy & Steve Williams.
