Worst Wrestler of The Year

0 0 1 1 Paul Roma
0 0 1 1 Steve Regal
0 0 1 1 Rick Steiner

There are too many stiffs to count! From a wrestling standpoint, the
worst, IMO, are Giant Gonzalez, The Undertaker, and The Equalizer, in
that order.

RICK SCAIA: Giant Gonzalez should be shot. End of story.

Worst Tag Team of The Year
--------------------------

0 0 1 1 PG-13

Once again, lots of choices are available for this award. I picked the
Jurassic Powers (Scott Norton & Hercules) first. When New Japan gave them
the IWGP Tag Titles, I just about had a stroke. The Bushwhackers are the
perennial favourites for this award and they easily get second, followed
closely this year by the Colossal Kongs. Harlem Heat also ranked highly
here, as did Men on a Mission - contenders for next year?

RICK SCAIA: The Bushwhackers are an embarrassment. The Kongs are a joke.
And the Coles are little more than bargain basement jobber material.

Worst Heel of The Year
----------------------

Award Description:
To be given to the person whose casting as a bad guy just didn't
work well. Maybe there was just no heel heat drawn or maybe the fans
actually cheered this person, but for whatever reason the heel image
just didn't get over.

There are heels that people are indifferent towards and then there are
heels that they absolutely don't care about. I think the three heels
that got me to care the least were Giant Gonzalez, Equalizer and Lex
Luger, so they get my votes in that order.

Worst Babyface of The Year
--------------------------

Award Description:
To be given to the person whose casting as a good guy just didn't
work well. Maybe there was just no face heat drawn or maybe the fans
actually booed this person, but for whatever reason the face image

Kamala as a babyface was terrible. The whole missionary angle with Slick
was tasteless and the "roll your opponent over" stuff exposed the business.
I went with him first. Lex Luger was an unconvincing heel, so what would
make anybody think he could be a convincing face? Nobody cares about him
and nobody reacts to him. I went with him second. Finally, Doink as a
face annoys me, so he gets third.

Worst Worker

There are a lot of lousy workers, but the worst, IMO, are Giant Gonzalez,

Not surprisingly, my least favourite wrestlers agree exactly with my
list of worst workers. Giant Gonzalez, the Undertaker, and the Equalizer
get the awards again.

Perhaps it's unfair to consider wrestlers who have deteriorated because
of injury rather than other reasons like motivation, etc. But if an
injured wrestler continues to work, I feel that he should still be
considered. That makes first place easy: Rick Rude. His biggest plus
was his ability to take spectacular bumps and with his injury late in
1992, he seems to have lost it. He's still great on the microphone
but he's only had dog matches all year and last year he had so many
very good matches. Second place goes to Riki Choshu, who is really
only a shadow of what he used to be in the mid 80s. I don't know that
the deterioration occurred this year, but it struck me this year.
Third goes to Lex Luger. He's become nothing more than a punch and
kick wrestler. He was never really that much more than that, but
his back injury made him lose whatever little ability he had above
that.

RICK DUGGAN: As to Most Deteriorated, it was a bad year for guys named Richard.
Sorry to say, it was just plain hard watching any of those three [Flair, Rude,
& Steamboat] most of the time this past year. On occassion, each one had a
good match; for the most part, though, their work was extremely disappointing.
I imagine I'm spoiled now with a regular diet of AJ, NJ, and AJW, but the
classic NWA stuff (even Flair/Steamboat from 1989) and SMW fare much better
against the AJ/NJ/AJW stuff than does recent work from 3 of WCW's top stars.

Most Underrated Wrestler
-------------------------

Award Description:
To be given to the person whose ability merits a far greater push than
the person receives. There may be many such people, but the winner
of this award should have the most ability with least push.

So many guys deserved to be pushed and aren't while talentless stiffs
get pushed down our throats. The worst offence is WCW's use (or lack
of use, to be precise) of Chris Benoit. Anybody that has seen Benoit
in New Japan or even Calgary had to have hopes when he appeared in WCW,
but outside of a couple of excellent matches (vs. 2 Cold Scorpio, and
tagged with Bobby Eaton vs. Ric Flair & Arn Anderson), they haven't
let him do anything and they certainly haven't booked him into somebody
the fans should appreciate. Second goes to Owen Hart. He's the best
of the Hart clan by far, and yet he's relegated to glorifed jobber
status. That will change in 1994 and it's about time. Third place
goes to "Dynamic" Jerry Lynn. Sure, size is the reason that he doesn't
get picked up, but he's really a super performer and could be a major
star if either of the big two every introduce a lightheavyweight
division again.

OTTO HEUER: It's damn hard to leave people like Owen Hart and Sabu off
my list, but there are so many people that just don't get pushes that
really *should*.

RICK SCAIA: I can't be the only one who thinks that the Smoking Gunns
have incredible potential, can I? They're already one of the better teams
in the country, IMO, and they're only going to get better with time.

The worst wrestling gimmicks are the ones that either affect the wrestling
too much or are so tasteless that they are offensive. I considered Kamala
briefly, but he really wasn't around as long as the guys that I did vote
for, so that knocked him out of the top three. First has to the Undertaker.
Yeah, he's over, but his matches are consistently in the negative stars
and his "wrestling" is so dominated by his gimmick that it's impossible
to explain why I'm a wrestling fan when he's on the TV screen. And it's
only gonna get worse in 1994. Second goes to Bastion Booger. For sheer
tastelessness, Booger wins out. Again, it's very difficult to explain
why I'm a fan of pro-wrestling when this guy is on the screen. Poor Mike
Shaw has finally humiliated himself completely for a few dollars. Third
place goes to the Equalizer for even trying to imitate Bruiser Brody.

Worst Wrestling Move
--------------------

Award Description:
To be given to the move that is the worst thing you've seen this year.
This shouldn't be given to a move that was flubbed by a wrestler
- the move was performed correctly, but was just too stupid for words.
This move should probably be a "finishing" move or something that was
meant to be spectacular.

0 1 0 3 Crush's claw
0 1 0 3 Brian Lee's cancellation
0 1 0 3 Giant Gonzalez' chair shots
0 0 1 1 Bret Hart's Sharpshooter
0 0 1 1 The Smoking Gunns' backdrop into piledriver
0 0 1 1 Marty Janetty's fist from the top rope
0 0 1 1 Giant Gonzalez' punches
0 0 1 1 Maxx Payne's Wakigatamae (Fujiwara arm-bar submission)
0 0 1 1 Equalizer's throat slam
0 0 1 1 Shawn Michaels' superkick

IMO, the worst wrestling moves are the ones that completely expose the
business every time you see them. I don't get as bothered by stupid moves
if they are at least somewhat believable. But things that are far removed
from reality really upset me. With that in mind, the worst move that we
saw frequently this year, IMO, was the Undertaker's zombie sit-up. How
does anybody explain this? "He's dead and impervious to pain, just like
Frankenstein..." When he did the sit-up after Paul Bearer had reclaimed
the urn, which contains the mystical energies that fuel the Undertaker (!),
I was embarrassed to be a wrestling fan for weeks. Next comes Kamala
having to roll his opponents over to pin them. Yet another thing that's
impossible to explain. How many years does he have to be around before
he knows which way to have his opponents lie? If only James Harris and
Jerry Lawler had never met. Third place goes to Giant Gonzalez' punches.
Giant Gonzalez can draw some heat from the crowd and some curiousity
because of his size, but as soon as he throws one punch in the ring
that kills everything. And considering that punches and a choke are
his only two "moves," this is a big problem.

OTTO HEUER: I hate to leave out my votes from previous years (Crush's
Compactor and Hulk Hogan's leg drop) but there are so many NEW stupid
"moves" that I had to leave these two out of my votes.

0 0 1 1 09/13/93: The Quebecers vs. The Steiners (WWF RAW TV)

My three votes for worst match of the year give the Undertaker a sweep.
First comes Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez from WrestleMania, then
Undertaker vs. Kamala from Survivor Series, and then Undertaker vs. Gonzalez
again from SummerSlam. All of these were negative stars and showcased
on PPVs.

RICk SCAIA: Not only was the 5/23 Sting vs. Nailz match a pathetic last
second replacement... it was also one of the most God-awful worst displays
of wrestling I'd ever seen. Not to mention the fact that it was a stupid
way to waste the "WCW Franchise" on a PPV. That said, I still thought there
were two worse matches during the year. :)

0 0 2 2 Paul Orndorff vs. Dustin Rhodes
0 0 1 1 Tatanka vs. Bam Bam Bigelow
0 0 1 1 The Beverly Brothers vs. The Steiners

Is there any doubt? Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez has to take first place.
Two PPV matches that were complete dogs fueled by a terrible angle at
the Royal Rumble. These two lumbering non-wrestling oafs are terrible
to watch in the ring with anybody, but with each other... Second place
goes to the stupid Dusty Rhodes vs. Masked Assassin feud, jelly bean.
What was the point of all this bad-mouthing, etc.? To bring the Assassin
in as a manager? What a waste of time. Even with no real matches coming
out of this feud, it still rates highly here. It didn't help that nobody
could keep a straight face whenever this character of ultimate evil, the
Assassin, appeared on camera, especially when he could only get three
of his chins into his mask. Third place goes to Johnny B. Badd vs.
Maxx Payne. It wasn't badly conceived or anything, but the matches were
so lousy.

RICK SCAIA: They haven't got in the ring yet... but the merest suggestion
of the feud between the Masked Assassin and Dusty Rhoades makes me retch.
If WCW is smart (doubtful) they'll kill this thing now, before it gets my vote
for 1994's worst feud, as well.

0 0 1 1 Hulk Hogan makes another movie

For me, the most disappointing news item of the year was that Akira Hokuto
was continuing to wrestle with a broken bone in her neck, an injured
shoulder and persisting knee trouble (still having **** matches, mind you)
and that she would retire at the end of 1993. She has easily been one of
my most favourite wrestlers since I first saw her years ago and I'm really
gonna miss her if she does retire. Second goes to so many wrestlers,
young and old, dying. It was a really sad year that way. Third place
goes to Jumbo Tsuruta's health problems. I bever realized that I really
liked Jumbo Tsuruta until he disappeared from All Japan.

OTTO HEUER: Honorable mention to "Cornette sells out and goes to the Whiff."

The most obnoxious is Vince McMahon. It's doesn't even matter if he's
promoting his product or talking about real-life things, he's incredibly
annoying. Second place goes to Eric Bischoff and third goes to Thunderbolt
Patterson. Patterson actually makes me hit the mute button every time he
talks.

OTTO HEUER: Even as I type this I can't believe I found two people more
obnoxious than Vince McMuffin.

RICK SCAIA: Todd Pettingill is one of the most annoying people alive.
Brandon Baxter even more so. And Chris Candido plays the whiny heel role
so well that it even gets on my nerves... plus he's attached to Tammy Fytch,
which makes him even more obnoxious in my book.

Gee, who's the best manager of the year? Jim Cornette is in a class by
himself and handily gets first place. I put Tammy Fytch second. Harley
Race gets third for taking those picture-perfect bumps all year.

B.J.HUGHES: Cornette's the only one worthy of my vote.

0 1 0 3 Ramon Castillo (Lucha Libre)
0 0 1 1 Chris Cruise
0 0 1 1 Raymond Rougeau
0 0 1 1 Slick Mick

Maybe my first place vote is unfair, but nobody's commentary excites me
like All Japan's Akira Fukuzawa. I don't understand most of what he says
- I can pick out move names and wrestler names. But he reminds me of
Jim Ross when Ross worked in Bill Watts' UWF a few years back. His
excitement just rubs off on me and makes watching the TV shows a great
experience. I went with Bob Caudle second and Jim Ross third. Ross
is the best when his product is good. Unfortunately, his product has
a lot of bad points these days. His debut at WrestleMania for the
worst PPV show perhaps of all time only documented his inability to
convince us that garbage isn't garbage.

Jesse Ventura is in a class by himself. A great colour commentator
should give some insight into the holds and matches. In recent years,
so many colour commentators have tried to get away with just being
funny to make you forget that you aren't seeing anything worthwhile
in the ring. Jesse is funny and informative. Second place goes to Dutch
Mantell. Third place goes to Larry Zbyszko, who for some strange reason
I'm starting to enjoy.

ERIC PATTON: I feel bad voting for Heenan and Lawler as two of the best color
commentators, because neither really is a color commentator. Rather, they're
guys who tell jokes to keep the audience amused and unaware of the fact that
zero is happening wrestling-wise. But who else was there to vote for?
Admittedly, they are both funny and can talk. But to call them color
commentators is a misnomer. But Jesse _is_ great.

OTTO HEUER: Jesse seems to be the ONLY one of the CCs that don't make me
reach for the mute/fast-forward. A pity, since Heenan used to be so great.

I think the best this year was Jim Cornette. He was great in SMW and
great in the WWF. The Hollywood Blonds get second and Ric Flair gets
third.

OTTO HEUER: I was really torn between Ric Flair and Jim Cornette for third
place. I almost had to flip a coin. :-)

The best angle this year was the two match series between Cactus Jack
and Big Van Vader, ending with Vader power bombing Jack on the floor and
Jack getting stretchered out. The realism of the show where Jack got
destroyed was something we haven't seen in a long time. The second
best angle was All Japan Women having JWP's Dynamite Kansai & Mayumi Ozaki
win the AJW Tag Titles at Dream Slam II. This added a lot of heat to
the feud between the promotions and helped make the challenges believable.
Imagine if the WWF had allowed the Heavenly Bodies to win the WWF Tag
Titles. The third best angle of the year was All Japan having Toshiaki
Kawada switch sides. Although it left Akira Taue without the only opponent
that he can have good matches with, it created so much interest in other
pairings.

RICK SCAIA: Do I even need to go into what a great angle I thought the
"Hart Saga" at SummerSlam was?? I didn't think so... Last time I did,
it turned into a gruesome display of verbosity between me and Herb...

ROBERT McMULLEN: Kawada joining Taue/Tsuruta's team. There simply are no
other "best angles" in a year when something like this can be pulled off
so successfully.

Best Organization
-----------------

Previous Winners:
1990: NWA
1991: WWF
1992: WCW

This Year's Winner: SMW

Participation Statistics:
Total 1st Place Voters = 66 (= 330 points)
Total 2nd Place Voters = 55 (= 165 points)
Total 3rd Place Voters = 47 (= 47 points)

Detailed Results:

1st 2nd 3rd Score

17 10 12 127 SMW
18 11 3 126 WWF
11 9 10 92 WCW
9 6 5 68 All Japan
4 5 4 39 All Japan Women
1 4 4 21 New Japan
1 3 4 18 USWA
1 1 2 10 AAA
1 1 2 10 NWA/WWA
1 1 1 9 PWA
1 0 0 5 Cleveland All Pro Wrestling
1 0 0 5 New England Wrestling Alliance
0 1 0 3 WFWA
0 1 0 3 GWF
0 1 0 3 Ken Patera's league
0 1 0 3 UWFi

The best organization, IMO, is All Japan Women. After the landmark
Dream Slam cards, there's little left to argue. All Japan gets second
easily. New Japan doesn't place this year since their product is easily
the worst it's been in recent years. Third place goes to Smoky Mountain
for having the most entertaining product and putting on great wrestling
matches consistently.

ERIC PATTON: I have never been fortunate enough to see a match from any of the
three promotions I voted as the three best of 1993. :-( If I had a VCR, I'd
be buying tapes from someone, but I'm too poor right now for that. But I
could not in good conscience vote for either of the big two North American
promotions as being the best, because they simply can't be. Vince couldn't
care less about hardcores, and WCW's moronic three (Bischoff, Rhodes, Anderson)
seem like they're doing their best to turn the organization into a WWF-copycat.
I've been reading RSPW for about four years now (although this is the first
time I've voted in this), and from what I've read, I've made a guess as to
which promotions I'd like the most. But I admit I haven't seen them, so you
have every right to refuse to count my vote in that category if you want.

Is there any doubt that the best two shows of the year are the two Dream
Slam cards? Dream Slam I had 11 matches of which 8 were easily **** or
better and lasted some 6.5 hours. Dream Slam II was shorter with only
9 matches of which 6 were **** or better. The only question is how to
order the two shows. I put Dream Slam I first and Dream Slam II second.
Third place goes to WCW's Super Brawl III, IMO the best PPV we've ever
seen in North America.

Some more netter-suggested awards:

"Never learned about something called video editing" award :
Vince McMahon claiming there were 16 Doinks because they all appeared on the
video wall at once.

The Worst Reversal in the action
1. Hulk Hogan's roid up
2. The Undertaker's sit up.

Most Deteriorated Non-wrestler
1. Bobby Heenen

Most Improved Non-wrestler
1. Bob Caudle

Comeback Of The Year
1. Gen'Ichiro Tenryu
2. Paul Orndorff
3. Terry Funk

ROBERT McMULLEN: Tenryu, without question. As the feuds between his WAR group,
New Japan, Raging Staff and Skinheads got cranking up, New Japan's popularity
soared. In fact, IMHO his upcoming Egg-o Dome-o match with Inoki is his
paycheck for helping New Japan have such a successful 1993.

Least Improved
1. Ric Flair
2. Rick Rude
3. Sid Vicious

ROBERT McMULLEN: Next time Ric Flair leaves WCW (if that ever happens), I don't
imagine we'll see nearly as much clamoring for him to return.

Most Embarrassing Wrestler
1. Bastion Booger
2. Shockmaster (primarily his introduction to WCW...)
3. Awesome Kongs

ROBERT McMULLEN: This category in the Observer awards is described as, "The
wrestler, manager, etc., who makes you most embarassed to be a wrestling fan
when non-fans are in the room" (paraphrase). Booger is so embarassing, even
I leave the room.
