The 1990 Usenet Year-End Pro-Wrestling Achievement Awards (Re-post)

The results in this note are based on votes obtained from you, the readers
of Rec.sport.pro-wrestling, over the past three weeks. I received a total
of 41 notes with full or partial votes. In the awards list presented
below, the number of valid votes received for a category appears in
brackets next to the category. The difference between this number and
41 is the number of disallowed/null votes received for that category.
I'll list the top 3 runner-ups (if they have more than a single vote)
and the winner for each category as well as their respective number of
votes in brackets, so you can see who really swept the field.

Who could forget Salvatore Balomo (sp?)!? I remember when my brother and I
first started watching the WWF and we noted that he was always REALLY
happy when he came into the ring and the crowd always seemed to like him
but he NEVER won. He would do a few cartwheels, danse around a bit and get
his ass kicked. When I fist heard that wrestlers who lose all the time are
sometimes called a "fish", I thought immediately of good, old Salvatore.

Amazingly enough (and I have my brother to back me up on this one - he saw
it too) I actually saw Salvatore win a match against and even bigger fish.
Boy, was he happy! The finishing move had been a Mule-Kick after about
10-15 minutes of mediocre wrestling. What a match! I don't remember seeing
him much after that. Perhaps Vince did a reversal of the usual phase out:
he let a jobber win before he left.

Hogan / Warrior was voted 2nd runner-up as the Worst Match,
and 1st runner-up
as the Best Match.

I'm sure there are others, if you examine the results in more detail.

As the results came in, I noticed that there were two groups of voters
for some categories. Not surprisingly, the ardent WWF supporters in
the group voted one way on some categories, while those that hate the
sports entertainment atmosphere voted another.
Most surprising to me was that there was only one vote in one category
for a Japanese wrestler, which of course did not place him.

I think that this is like when, a number of years ago, on one
particular survey, Howard Cosell was picked as the best announcer and
the worst announcer. In fact, Howard was the only announcer that most
people surveyed could remember.

Perhaps this is a similar situation. At least people remembered Piper
as an announcer, and hogan/warrior as a match. How many matches do
you remember at the end of a year?

I agree...Tony Garea is a favorite of mine too. I also liked Chief
Jay Strongbow...he put on a good show. Anyone out there remember Frankie
Williams? He had to be the ultimate hard-working-but-always-loses guy.

I remember a time in early 1980's when Vince still did charity events.
They held a wrestling event at the high school in my hometown to
benefit the volunteer firefighters. The big match was Snuka vs.
Pedro Morales. This was when Snuka was still a bad guy. We cheered
for him anyway. :)

Frankie had to be one of my favorite "losers" of all time. I even remember
the time when Piper had him on Piper's Pit, and beat him up there too!
The guy had a lot of guts for someone who was definitely not going anywhere.

The "Unpredictable" Johnny Rodz. Yessir, the Rodster lived up to his
monicker, attacking opponents on the runway, during the introduction,
or sometimes, not at all.

Future jobber hall of fame member: Izzy Slapowitz - making his debut
on The Weasel and Gorilla show this week. Where does Wince get
these guys from?

Speaking of 'Prime Time', what church does Brother Love represent? I'd
like to join it. What a miracle! Perhaps along with bodybuilding,
Vince could start up some kind of faith healing traveling show. He could
start collecting un-needed wheelchairs, canes, crutches, etc. Maybe
even a line of WWF Healing buddies?

He seems to be running a wrestling school in Brooklyn these days. I
saw a show he put on about a year or a year and a half ago.

Not surprising to me. The majority of this group seems content to
ignore Japan (and anything outside WWF/NWA for that matter). The lack
of depth in the results shown above does seem to confirm that.

Izzy Slapowitz was a jobber in the AWA and for the Tunneys in Toronto
during the late 70's and early 80's. He also worked for Angelo Poffo's
ICW as a manager around 1981 or 82, managing the "Devil's Duo"
(perennial jobbers Doug Vines and Jeff Sword). He has been away from
wrestling since 1983 or 84; the Apter magazines once claimed that his
absence from the ring was due to his being in Israel on a kibbutz.
