If you are reading the NFD on one of the RSPW newsgroups, or anywhere on the web other than the revamped News From Dayton Web Site, or if you are linking directly here without checking out the main News From Dayton Headlines Page, I strongly encourage you to make the jump to the NFD on the web at http://homepages.udayton.edu/~scaiarij/wrestling/nfd.htm I think you'll find the trip worthwhile, as there are many exclusive features to the NFD Web Site, along with updates on breaking news, so that you don't have to wait a full week for the NFD's take on the latest rumors. THE ALEX MARVEZ COLUMN * Whoops.... as I think I've mentioned, we've recently moved. And one thing that we haven't taken care of yet is getting a new subscription to the Dayton Daily News. So I didn't manage to see a copy of Alex's column this week. However, since Alex joined us for the "Cold Day in Hell" PPV, I think I can probably briefly sum up what he churned out for the Sunday paper myself... at the very least, I can run down the topics we discussed and present them as news items for this week. And I promise I'll be getting an actual subscription to the paper before next week! * As is always the case the day of a PPV, Alex's top story would be previewing the big event. Undertaker and Shamrock going over in the top two matches were probably the obvious predictions. * Marvez also had the scoop on PG-13 debuting in ECW... the team has had most of its success in the Memphis-based USWA, but is also well-known as the pair of NOD rappers who appear in the WWF. In ECW, the duo will NOT be doing any of the NOD schtick. * Alex also told us that it's expected that Papa Shango will return to the WWF effective tonight. He'll likely become involved with the Mankind/Undertaker feud, which seems natural enough. But I really am not that big a fan of bringing back a gimmick as outrageous as the voodoo-master Papa Shango. * Alex Marvez's column appears every Sunday in the Dayton Daily News. In addition to sharing his wrestling thoughts there, Alex is also once again lurking about the America OnLine Grandstand Wrestling Area, and can be e-mailed with questions at "alex_marvez@coxohio.com". Also, Alex can also be heard on Mondays and Fridays on WING-FM (102.9) at 7:20 a.m. talking about wrestling and other sports. IN OTHER NEWS... * Last night's WWF "Cold Day in Hell" PPV didn't provide a lot in the way of surprises, but did provide a solid and entertaining 2 hours of wrestling. While it is becoming harder and harder to make PPVs seem really good and special, especially with Monday night programs featuring so many noteworthy events, I still feel as though last night's PPV is worthy of a moderate "Thumbs Up." On the show: o Rock-a-Billy defeated Jesse James pretty easily on the Free For All. o Hunter Hearst Helmsley pinned Flash Funk in a solid PPV opener; as you might expect, Chyna was also involved. o Mankind used the Mandible Claw to force Rocky Maivia into submission in a good, competitive match. o Ahmed Johnson was able to beat Crush and Savio Vega in succession, but was not able to put away Faarooq... after wrestling three men for a combined 15-plus minutes, Ahmed was pinned following a Dominator. o Ken Shamrock looked quite good in his WWF debut, going about 20 minutes with Vader and showing a lot different skills before using an anklelock to force the big man to tap out. o Steve Austin appeared to have the Undertaker beat when Brian Pillman (who had been sitting ringside with the rest of the Hart Foundation) jumped the barrier and began the WWF: as an announcer or manager. * George Steele has parted ways with the WWF. Many sources are saying Steele was "fired" or "let go," but the parting was at least partially mutual. Steele had been a road agent for the WWF for the past several years, but was reportedly interested in taking on a more active role in front of the camera. Titan wasn't interested in Steele becoming a part of storylines again (though a few years back, Steele did, in fact, take part in a mini-angle at a series of MSG shows). The end result is that Steele is no longer affiliated with the WWF. Already, he has lined up some independent bookings in the coming months. [Alex Marvez put forth a humorous idea: WCW should lure Steele by offering him a chance to play a role in the Savage/DDP feud. Steele could start stalking Kimberly in much the same way as he did Elizabeth 11 years ago in the WWF.] * The USA Network recently bought the rights to "Walker: Texas Ranger" and announced plans to start airing the program at 8pm every Monday through Friday beginning on August 4. Obviously, that would seem to impact the WWF, as RAW currently runs on Mondays from 8-10pm. However, keep in mind that USA ostensibly ran "Murder, She Wrote" every weeknight at 8pm, despite the fact that since October, RAW has been on Monday's at 8. Also, as many other sources are indicating, with "Le Femme Nikita" moving to Sundays, it would not be out of the question for RAW to run 2 hours from 9-11. Simply put, it is impossible to know USA Network's exact plans for August just yet. I'm sure that they will make decision to ensure that RAW remains competitive. * If this seems like a very short NFD Weekly, I apologize. I expect this to be a busy news week, and with me back to a regular schedule, I assure you that I'll be placing nearly daily updates up here. So be sure to check frequently for the latest news! This is only the NFD Weekly Edition. Be sure to make regular visits to the NFD Web Site for daily updates and tons of other exclusive features! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The News From Dayton is Copyright 1995, 1997 by Rick Scaia.
