From: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Subject: [INFO] The News From Dayton, 7/7/96 Date: 1996/07/09 Message-ID: <4rsg1a$sd0@alpha.sky.net> Organization: The National Capital FreeNet Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling.info,rec.sport.pro-wrestling -------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTICE! -- Effective this week, "The News From Dayton" has been HTML-ized on my web page. To all that have bookmarks or links to "The News" note that this means there is a new URL, http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~ag725/HomePage.news.html, which you will have to link to! The Web version the "The News" will be enhanced from this UseNet version, in so far as it will be updated throughout the week and will also have other features (including recent PPV recaps and links to other great sites). I encourage EVERYONE to stop by and enjoy the new News, in a hot new format! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the usual format... at least for a while. We'll start with the Dayton Daily News version of Alex Marvez's "hot news": * The top story this week is, of course, the intrigue surrounding WCW's Bash at the Beach PPV. Marvez notes that while he expected Bischoff and Co. to botch the "outsiders" angle, it is the hottest damn thing going, and may even catapult WCW to its highest PPV buyrate ever. Guesses about who would surface as the third "outsider" are just that... GUESSES! WCW had suppossedly not cemented the idea until the last second. Main speculation surrounded Hulk Hogan (who, showing just how much savvy he has as far as the wrestling buz and keeping things secret, blabbed on the set of his new movie -- which also stars Roddy Piper -- that he had agreed to be the third "WWF invader"), Mabel (1995 WWF KotR winner who is reported headed to WCW), Jeff Jarrett (another notable ex-WWFer headed to WCW), and Lex Luger (who jumped from the WWF to WCW late last year and would be called an "advance spy" if they turn him). [Late note: as we know now, it is Hogan who turned out to be the third man. More below.] * Only other major story covered in the DDN this week is in regards to the Ultimate Warrior's situation in the WWF. While it is true that his father passed away last week, Warrior never notified the WWF offices of that bit of info, nor that he would be no-showing his dates for a week after his father's death. While both sides have met and come to an agreement, there is still some question as to Warrior's long-term status with Titan. * Upcoming shows in the Dayton area: WCW runs Hara Arena on July 27, with a Flair/Savage cage match on top... a tag match with the "Outsiders" may be added. Also, Unified Championship Wrestling has a show on July 21 (call 513-940-3397 for more info). * Alex answers questions from fans most weeks. You can reach him with questions at "Alex1Marv@aol.com" or "alex_marvez@dni.com", or if you are on America On-Line, you can interact with Alex in his "Hot News with Alex Marvez" folder as part of the Grandstand Wrestling area (keyword: gswrestling). In addition to Alex's column, other online sources (mostly AOL) have provided me with the following info, which I now share with you: * On last night's Bash at the Beach, Hulk Hogan emerged as the "outsiders" third man, after a major tease was pulled with Lex Luger being booked into being stretchered back in the first minute of the match. After coming in to get the pinfall win for his team, Hogan gave a rambling speech that definitely intimated that he and the other three guys came directly from the WWF. This actually seemed to have the effect of finally turning the "outsiders" heel in the fans eyes. For some reason, the announcers made a huge deal out of Eric Bischoff being missing the entire show... why do I get the sinking feeling that he's going to be inserting himself into this angle unecessarily? * More on Warrior: Even though the situation has been smoothed over for now, word is that the WWF honchos are seriously wondering if Warrior is worth the headaches he causes (as, despite the death of Warrior's father, there was more than that to his week of no-shows, including some contractual issues). Warrior will certainly be around for the next IYH PPV, but it's possible the rocky road he and Vince travel may cause Warrior to get bumped from the bus sooner than his 18 month contract would suggest. * Nitro scored another ratings victory on 7/1, beating RAW by seven-tenths of a ratings point. The Nitro replay set *another* record, scoring a 1.7 (besting the 6/23 replay's 1.6). Nitro had a significant ratings increase in the second hour after a slow start (including a major jump in the last 15 minutes), while RAW had a poor opening quarter hour before building a steady final 45 minutes. * The previous week's quarter-hour-breakdown saw RAW remain steady throughout the entire live hour, while Nitro was steady for the first 1h45m before jumping a half-ratings point in its final 15 minutes. * WCW on the east coast did OK houses in Hartford, Philly, and NYC; $70,000, $55,000, and $90,000 respectively. At the NYC show, both Konnan and Kevin Sullivan took the chance to address some ECW fans in the audience. Konnan got pissy at them, and Sullivan taunted them by saying he liked ECW just fine, but that he'd just signed away one of their stars the week before. (This could be Mikey, Raven, or Jerico, depending on what set of rumors you want to believe.... but keep in mind that both Raven and Jerico are holding gold.) * Look for Ron Simmons to debut as Sunny's new singles wrestler. Don't know if there will be inter-racial romance overtones or not. * Here is the full line-up of WWF PPV dates and sites for the rest of 1996: - In Your House Vancouver, BC July 21, 1996 - Summerslam Cleveland, OH August 18, 1996 - In Your House Philadelphia, PA September 22, 1996 - In Your House Indianapolis, IN October 20, 1996 - Survivor Series MSG, New York City November 17, 1996 - In Your House Lakeland, FL December 15, 1996 -- Rick Scaia | I'm on the Web now!
