This week will be a slightly different format, for a couple of reasons. It's also a "good news/bad news" sort of deal. First, the reason I'm not leading off with Alex Marvez's Dayton Daily News Column is because it did not appear in todays paper. Alex has been in the process of vacationing/moving (from Middletown, OH -- located a good half hour from Dayton -- to my own suburban locale of Centerville, OH -- loacated a mere 15 minutes from downtown Dayton), and was in Chicago this past week, and without a serviceable modem link-up to Dayton. Thus, no column this week. And thus, I scramble for worthwhile info to give you kids. Next: the good news is that Alex is going full bore with an Online Onslaught of his own in the coming weeks. He already is accepting *your* e-mail (at the following two addresses: "alex_marvez@dni.com" and "Alex1Marv@aol.com"), and has just received his own folder ("Hot News w/ Alex Marvez") in the Grandstand Wrestling section of America On-Line. Alex is also planning on opening his own web site (http://www.bodyslams.com) VERY soon. Details will follow, I'm sure. The bad news in all this (and it's really not all that horrible), is that with Alex moving in the Internet forum himself, it is kinda redundant for me to continue to supply his info to you. It's been fun pretending I was more than the smallest of cogs in the vast machine that is the on-line wrestlin fan community; stealing Alex's info and sharing it with y'all has been my sole legitimate reason for doing so. I'm most likely going to cease "The News From Dayton" before too much longer... Otto's "Hack Notes" already provide a damn fine round-up of all the info available elsewhere online, and I'd hate to become another worthless shill, repeating what you've read elsewhere. My purpose in starting "The News" a year ago was to provide info that you might not read elsewhere. With Alex coming online himself, you'll probably be reading it elsewhere; and you *should* be reading it elsewhere, since you'll now have the chance to get the info straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Anyway, I'm just trying to say that "The News From Dayton" may be winding down it's useful life. Any input on the matter is welcome. And as always, a tip of the hat to those of you who have taken the time to read this post every week since last July. And a slap on the back to all of you, as well, to get you headed off in the right direction to continue to patronize Alex Marvez and his info. This time, directly, rather than through this humble minion. And now, on to some actual info: * Well, I said Alex had his own folder on AOL now... in lieu of his usual DDN column, I will lead of with his first day of posts (including some info) there: * Flair/Savage steel cage matches will be headlining the string of WCW house shows coming up. On the east coast, it is possible that Bruno Sammartino will referee these matches. It is also expected that Hall and/or Nash will be entrenched and have matches on these house shows (at least, by the time WCW makes it's way to Dayton on July 27, Marvez expects the ex-WWF'ers to be in action). * Disco Inferno is gonna get a major push in WCW startin next month. * Arn Anderson was once again in charge of the WCWSN tapings last week, as Kevin Sullivan took the night off (in Alex's words "Probably to watch ECW and steal their angles" -- HAR! No wonder I like this guy!). * Marvez hinted at a big surprise finish to the Flair/Anderson vs. Greene/Mongo match (but was sworn to secrecy). AFter the PPV, Alex stated that the Mongo heel turn was being hashed out earlier in the week, and that he had also heard that they were going to close things out by having the Arn/Flair/Mongo trio cut Greene's hair. In the end, Alex was enthusiastic about the GAB PPV, and called it a super effort for WCW. [For any of you who did know -- Bischoff is a legit third degree black belt, so he is more than capable of taking a bump onto a padded table without hurting himself.] * The current favorite in the "Who'll Be the Guest Ref at KotR" contest is Owen Hart, sayeth Marvez. This will lead to a screw-job finish, and Ahmed Johnson running in, to set up a tag match meain event (Shawn/Ahmed vs. Bulldog/Owen) for the July IYH. * Last weeks Monday Night ratings saw RAW rebound from the previous weeks defeat to once again score a win over the two-hour Nitro (Nitro's ratings are averaged to achieve one rating for the two hour show). Marvez will provide the quarter hour breakdowns again later in the week, but did tease us by mentioning that Nitro's last 15 minutes out-scored the rest of the 2 hour show by more than 15%. Some other info (again, mostly from places on AOL): * Wrestling legend Dick Murdoch has passed away at age 48. "Dirty" Dick's most recent "Brush with Greatness" was in January, 1995, when he completely entertained myself and my group of friends by lasting until the last four or five combatents in the 1995 WWF Royal Rumble. He may have had great moments back in the 70s and 80s, before I was a graps fan, but the night he made us all think that maybe -- just maybe -- a beer drinkin', long haired son of a gun could walk off with Pam Anderson was one I'll always remember. ;) Rest in Peace, Captain Redneck. * Ron Simmons has signed with the WWF. He should make the next TV tapings. * Your weekly Brian Pillman update: He's signed with the WWF. From information made available on both the WWF On-Line site and the WWF 900-Line -- as well as on WWF TV this past weekend -- we know that Pillman will be keeping the "Loose Cannon" image. Pillman's entrance is being hyped BIG TIME. My own fears that Pillman might be mis-used have been more than put to rest. Right now, I am actually so comfortable with what Titan is doing that seeing Brian in ECW has lost its luster. Anyway, Pillman has a "press conference" scheduled for Monday (today) in Stamford, CT, with highlights to air on RAW tonight. And then, at 11pm, Pillman will appear for on online chat on the WWF Online site. * The new WWF publication "RAW Magazine" continues to seem like pretty cool read. Actually, I just subscribed based on some of the content of the next issue. The "Informer" bandied about such terminology as "worker" and "house show" in his report. But it was "Vic Venom's" editorial that really interested me. It was in regards to Kevin "Diesel" Nash and his departure from the WWF. Here are som excerpts: "Diesel is dead. Kevin Nash has left the World Wrestling Federation. Believe it or not, he is going back to the organization that almost cost him his career -- WCW. Remember Oz and Vinnie Vegas? Yeah, them guys. [...] Do I agree with Kevin's decision? Yes and no." "First, the yes. As myself and a billion others out there, Kevin Nash has a family to support. If somebody is gonna guarantee me an absurd amount of cash for a three - year period, I just MIGHT take it." "HOWEVER, if I was Kevin Nash, I definitely wouldn't have. Here's why: I remember, many moons ago, when I use to watch a guy in the WCW who went by the name of Oz. I'll never forget trying to figure out why a man this HUGE had such a ridiculous gimmick. But, much to its credit, I guess WCW soon experienced the same rationalization. So, the brain trust in Atlanta got together, and they decided to transform OZ into a 7 - foot, 300 - pound - plus gambler by the name of Vinnie Vegas. In my opinion, that gimmick might have been even worse than the almighty WIZARD!!! Here was a guy who was a genetic freak, and they couldn't figure out what to do with him?!!! Week after week they were beating this guy like he was Dwayne Gill, for cryin' out loud!!!" "Vince got his hands on Kevin Nash, and the rest was history. [...] TOGETHER, AS A TEAM, Vince AND Diesel had come up with the right formula, and Kevin Nash was finally reaching his potential. There would be no more ridiculous face painting and no more "snake eyes"; the World Wrestling Federation was now running on DIESEL POWER!!!" "Good luck, Kevin Nash, and thanks." Pretty good reading... an *intelligent* WWF party-line makes for some interesting reading. And maybe for some interesting discussion, eh? * Here is the full line-up of WWF PPV dates and sites for the rest of 1996: - King of the Ring Milwaukee, WI June 23, 1996 - In Your House Vancouver, BC July 21, 1996 - Summerslam Cleveland, OH August 18, 1996 - In Your House Philadelphia, PA September 22, 1996 - In Your House Indianapolis, IN October 20, 1996 - Survivor Series MSG, New York City November 17, 1996 - In Your House Lakeland, FL December 15, 1996 Later..... -- Rick Scaia | I'm on the Web now!
