From: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Subject: [INFO] News From Dayton, 12/17/95 Date: 1995/12/17 Message-ID: Sender: ag725@freenet3.carleton.ca (Rick Scaia) Organization: The National Capital FreeNet Reply-To: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling As I threatened, here is the "usual" news from Dayton, in the form of the recap of the Alex Marvez column and whatever other bits o' info I can piece together. Once again this week, Alex seems disinterested in supplying a series of fascinating facts, preferring instead to do exactly what it is that I HATE about most of the sheets out there: he just picks a topic and expounds his own opinions, passing it off as fact. Oh well, here it is: * Headline is "WWF bracing for ratings dud." There is no real evidence to back up the headline, but Marvez does run down why he thinks IYH is destined to be unpopular with fans. For one thing, he notes that the least bought WWF PPV of all time was the last IYH, with Davey Boy Smith in the main event; once again, DBS is in the main event of show. Survivor Series was bought by only half as many people as who bought Survivor Series '94. WWF television is spending more time building to the Royal Rumble PPV rather than on this show. And cable TV ratings have been sliding, as Nitro has been able to fight RAW to a draw since its beginning and USA Network is pulling the RAW replayon Thrusday due to low ratings. An altogether pointless lead story... * The Paul Orndorff angle on Nitro was done not to attempt to upstage the Shawn Michaels incident on RAW, but rather to explain why Orndorff will be out of action for some time. Paul needs real-life neck surgery. * According to Marvez, the leading candidate to get the Sister Love roll is not Missy Hyatt, but rather Beulah McGillicutty of ECW fame. Other stuff (mostly from AOL... specifically from "Georgie's Chatterbox," which is, BTW, the best damn folder on all of AOL!!!!): * Al Snow is probably in for a gimmick change. Could be he is headed back to the "Crow"-like gimmick we were all hearing about way back when he first signed. [Actually, "The Lariat" confirms this, and also suggests that Aldo Montoya might be repackaged, too.] * Add All Japan Pro Wrestling to the list of possible (but NOT probable) groups who may send some emmissaries to participate in the Royal Rumble. * Either Buddy Landell or Steve Austin could come into the WWF doing a "Hollywood Blonde" gimmick. [My main question is not how this might violate WCW's rights to such a gimmick, but rather is how this would effect Goldust, who seems to me to be the ULTIMATE Hollywood Blonde.] * There is WCW Clash of the Chumpions in January (either the 23rd or 24th), which will feature the Public Enemy vs. the Nasty Boys, as well as including Konnan. This Clash will take palce in Las Vegas. * Brian Pillman is also back on AOL... I guess he was gone briefly, as he posted of how "Big Brother" had interferred with him having his AOL folder, but that he was returning to once again brighten our lives with his presence. His on-line character is every bit as obnoxious and un-entertaining as his Horseman character. Only tidbit from Brian is that he and Chris Benoit will, more than likely, become a full time tag team. [For those of you scoring at home, and even those of you who are alone, Pillman is joined by Johnny B. Badd, Tod Gordon, Joe Pedicino, and Georgie M. of the "Chatterbox" in having folders on AOL.... Georgie's Chatterbox rules; JBB is very open and honest, but tends to spend a lot of time responding to markish posts; Pedicino is never around in his folder; Tod always has a timely response for any question; and as I said before, Flyin' Brian's folder isn't really all that much fun.] Well, there you go... along with the supplementary "Holiday Edition," I think this has been a good week for "The News From Dayton." I'll probably be back late tonight with the IYH recap; Jim Hellwig, Jeff Jarrett, and Roddy Piper were all spotted in or around Hershey, PA, in case you missed that newsflash! Could make for an interesting show! Later....... -- Rick Scaia | "Barkeep...
