From: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Subject: [INFO] The News From Dayton, 12/10/95 Date: 1995/12/11 Message-ID: Sender: ag725@freenet3.carleton.ca (Rick Scaia) Organization: The National Capital FreeNet Reply-To: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling I only had time to peruse the weekly Alex Marvez column in the Dayton Daily News, so that's the only source of news this week. Once again, he goes into some depth on one story, rather than providing a couple of interesting morsels of info. However, this week, if Marvez is right, the news is big. Here it is: * The headline reads "WWF goes to the Extreme." Marvez goes on to explain how the WWF is now actively working with Extreme Championship Wrestling. With the traditional market for WWF wrestling (meaning kids under 13) not as profitable as it once was, Vince McMahon and TitanSports have decided to change gears and target "Generation X'ers" (young men, mostly). As evidence of the new relationship, Marvez offers up the stepped up intensity and realism of WWF TV the last couple weeks. He also mentions that "WWF performers" the Heavenly Bodies and Brother Love have appeared in ECW recently. In addition, Bruce Pritchard (who actually is Brother Love, if you didn't already know) has moved up to booking duties with the WWF recently and is a very close long-time friend of Paul E. Dangerously (ECW booker). Although he doesn't spell it out very clearly, I think Marvez was also trying to convey the point that ECW may be able to enterr the PPV market with Titan's help, something that has eluded them to this point. Marvez also briefly discussed how WCW has also taken on some of the Extreme style (having The Giant steal 911's chokeslam and the signings of Eddy, Benoit, and Malenko were the main evidence here) due to Kevin Sullivan's wife (Nancy "Woman" Sullivan) being entrenched in ECW. * [I will believe this item when Bret Hart becomes the "Excellence of Extremity" and defends his WWF Title in the ECW Arena. I'm not saying Marvez is completely wrong, but I think he maybe is overstating the level of cooperation between the two organizations.... for one thing, the Heavenly Bodies haven't been with the WWF for 6 months. And I haven't heard of Pritchard doing his Brother Love schtick in ECW. FWIW, I am certainly willing to believe that the WWF is taking on an extreme influence, but not that the two groups are actively working together. At least, that's all I'm willing to believe now.] * Also, Marvez says that Jeff Jarrett is back to working with the USWA, and that he is negociating for a return to the WWF. "Roadie" Brian Armstrong will not be back, though. One other item (I guess I lied): * On the Action Zone today, the WWF gave its "Match of the Year" honor to the SummerSlam ladder match between Razor and Michaels. This much I agree with. I also agree with naming Bret/Hakushi as one of the rrunner-ups. Other than that, I think RSPW would have an entirely different outlook. [On late note, on last week's Action Zone, Duke "the Dumpster" Droese did an absolutely SUPER set of impersonations of other WWF stars. I can't describe it.... he was just funny as hell. If you missed it, I'm sorry.] Later..... -- Rick Scaia | "Barkeep...
