From: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Subject: [INFO/Some Opinion] News From Dayton, 10/16/95 Date: 1995/10/17 Message-ID: Sender: ag725@freenet.carleton.ca (Rick Scaia) Organization: The National Capital FreeNet Reply-To: ag725@FreeNet.Carleton.CA (Rick Scaia) Newsgroups: rec.sport.pro-wrestling Sorry I'm a day late, folks... news was slim this week (VERY slim) so I was thinking about just taking this week off. But I decided, "Hey, these kids are DEPENDING on me, dammit," so here goes.... as always, the highlights of Alex Marvez's Dayton Daily News column (every Sunday in the sports section) are first: * Main story is about the Nitro taping in Dayton, 10/31. The advertised matches for TV are: Flair and Sting vs. Harlem Heat for the WCW Tag Titles (side bar: Heat, I guess are the new champs, so I guess this is pretty big news.... I assume the match has already been taped), Savage vs. Pittman, and Badd vs. Disco Inferno. Also scheduled as dark matches are: Pillman vs. Wright, Orndorrf vs. Mr. JL, and Sabu vs. Eddy. However, Marvez suggests that the televised matches being advertised are probably gonna change. First, Flair is set to turn on Sting, so that match is off. Second, with the stip set forth by Sting, Luger and Savage will probably be added as a match for Nitro thus eliminating the Macho/Pittman match. Also, Marvez thinks that it should be considered a very real possibility that Inferno will beat Badd for the TV Title. So one (or two) of the dark matches might see the light of day. This is good news if Sabu and Eddy get the call up! * Also only of interest to local fans is that Undertaker/Goldust has been added to the WWF card coming to Cinci on 11/4. The main event is Shawn/Diesel/Bret vs Cornette's WWF Militia (Yoko/Owen/Bulldog). * Finally, while he doesn't say what gimmick Al Snow will be using, Marvez does say that he'll be coming into the WWF as a babyface.... I'm not sure this is what I'd do, but we'll see.... * Considering there were two super-huge stories out of Titan this week, I'm shocked Marvez didn't cover either. Watts being in-then-out- then-back-in and Michaels' getting his ass kicked rate as two pretty big news items. Quick opinion: Not that anyone really cares (that's why you've all stopped reading), but I figured I should weigh in with my take on this week's Nitro/RAW battle. For the first time since they've actually competed head to head, I'm gonna give a nod to Nitro... for two big reasons. First, even if only fleetingly, the Diamond Doll looked great. And second, Benoit/Eddy was the best match Nitro has given us yet. Sting/Flair/Pillman/Arn was watchable, too. Why WCW has to waste my time with Hogan, Meng, the Giant, Duggan, et al when they have so much other talent is beyond me. This is not to say that RAW was weak. This was not Nitro in a squash... this was a ***** battle, with both sides battling valiantly. RAW had a very good PG-13/Gunns title match, a super treatment fo the touchy Michaels situation, and a cage match that made Nitro's attempt last week look downright stupid. It's still 3 weeks old, though, and as good as it was, it's not live. There is a lot to be said for live TV. Both shows were very good, with a slight edge to Nitro. Makes me glad I own a VCR. RAW looks like a winner next week... they are live again, and have Alundra/Bertha (I bet it sets up bringing in some AJW!) and a 20 man battle royal with the winner getting an IC title shot. ANything can happen!
