A beginner's guide to RSPW) --------------------------------------------------------- 0. What is RSPW? It's where you are now! Can't you read?!? 0.1 Yeah, but where is here? Well, here is rec.sport.pro-wrestling (a.k.a. RSPW) a pro-wrestling newsgroup on USEnet. USEnet has a bunch of newsgroups like this about all kinds of other stuff. RSPW was created in 1989 after a couple years of making wrestling fans hang out on rec.sport.misc Boy, if only the founding fathers could see RSPW today, eh?! 0.2 Isn't this group supposed to be about wrestling? Yeah, well, shit happens, as the saying goes... and in the case of RSPW, a LOT of shit happens every day! A lot of it NOT about wrestling. 0.3 But I want to read about wrestling! Killfile what you don't want to read. Legend has it there's wrestling discussion in here SOMEWHERE... 0.2 What are trolls? These little fellas are around RSPW to annoy, harrass and generally piss you off! A rule of thumb for the beginner is to be nice to everybody and ignore people who aren't nice back. 0.3 What are flame wars? Flame wars are a trade of insults between posters, often involving swearing and personal attacks. They can range from the very intense to intensely hilarious! A favorite trick of trolls is to start flame wars to get attention. 0.4 What does *PLONK* mean? It means you're killfiled! Being killfiled means that the person who said *PLONK* to you isn't reading anything you say anymore. Better luck next time! 0.5 What does TOSed mean? TOS means "Terms of Service". See, when posters get too rowdy some people report them to their Internet Service Provider (a.k.a. ISP) and if the poster gets their account canceled, people say they were TOSed. Sounds like fun, huh? Oh yeah, people who report posters to their ISPs are called "Net.Cops". 0.6 What is the RSPW FAQ? The good twin of the FUQ, the FAQ is a bunch of Frequently Asked Questions about wrestling. You know, the thing RSPW never talks about. The FAQ has been updated (read: "kept") by a number of people. Right now it's sort of MIA, but rumour has it Jeff "Fro" Wahlman, Christopher Robin Zimmerman and others are giving it a much needed facelift so RSPW can enjoy it's charms again. --------------------------------------------------------- Part 1: Individual Posters and Personalities --------------------------------------------------------- (NOTE: More names to be added once you become memorable enough for the FUQ keeper to put you in.) :) 1.1 Alex Cain Possibly the most TOSed troll in RSPW history, Alex always finds a way back to the newsgroup, much to many peoples' chagrin! RSPW Highlights: - Infamous flame wars with Chad Bryant, Avenger, Pete KOF and just about everybody else on RSPW at one time or another. - Brags he's been TOSed at least 18 times, probably more and is still posting. - The U.A.'s creation of the nickname "Dink" which has stuck to Alex like glue. Also known as: Ace, RSPW98, The Model Poster 1.2 Alicia Snow This young woman of unknown appearance captivated RSPW with her increasingly bizzare behaviour in 1998/1999. Fake Alicia's have been appearing at random ever since. RSPW Highlights: - Offering every guy in RSPW a blow job upon her appearance in the newsgroup. Later explained it was a joke, but nobody cared. - Her brief online "relationship" with John Henry DeJong. 1.3 Bob Barnett RSPW likes to ask Bob stuff and Bob likes to answer it. It's a relationship that works pretty well. Look for all the "Hey Barnett!" posts. Bob is also a friend of Vamipiro, a WCW superstar and has a real life feud with Konnan, also a WCW wrestler. RSPW Highlights: - War of words with 1wrestling.com's Bob Ryder. Even created the term "Bob.con". - Drove past on again/off again RSPWer Liz Michael's house and put a photo of it on his web page. 1.4 Chad Bryant Chad has been on RSPW for several years but is more recently know for his net.coping efforts and his warmth towards the works of Karl Marx. Also known as: Jim Epstein, The Number One Enthusiast of Jim Duggan. 1.10 Evan Schlesinger Known for being "hard edged" with clueless newbies and heatseekers alike, Evan had a flame war with Liz Michael that kind of marked a turning point in RSPW history. RSPW Highlights: - Flamewar with Liz Michael over the legality of RSPWWCW that consumed RSPW for two months in early 1997. Ended when Evan left RSPW, never to be seen on the newsgroup again. 1.11 FunkyM FunkyM, internet superstar (yeah, right!), is known for talking in the third person and disappearing for weeks and weeks, then posting his shit. He gets a spot in here cause he wrote this damn thing! RSPW Highlights: - Creator & writer of RSPWECW. (See Part 2: Parody Feds) - The infamous "bike crash" post. - The arousing "RSPW Funkinator" which parodied Vizh's RSPW Ejaculator newsletter. 1.12 Gern Blanston Is one of the original moderators of RSPWM. Famous for his "Rhymes with..." tag line and fun loving nature! RSPW Highlights: - Almost never posts off topic. 1.15 John Henry DeJong Ex-RSPWer who went by the names John Henry and John DeJong. Later explained Henry was his middle name. Was an announcer/worker in indy feds. Knew the Hardy Boyz before they were WWF Tag Champs. RSPW Highlights: - RSPW turning point flamewar with the Troll World Order, mainly Pete KOF and XXStrength (now XStrength) and later every troll to grace the newsgroup while he was here. - Could provide unique insight into the wrestling biz when he wasn't flaming the pants off somebody. 1.16 Liz Michael Is Liz a he or a she? That was the question which RSPWers asked themselves and Liz wasn't shy of making them ask. She even posted nude pictures of herself on her website. If you find them, be prepared to learn brail. Known for her staunch Republicanism and her wild background story. RSPW Highlights: - Forms what would later become RSPWWCW with Tom Zyklin in 1996. - Engages Evan Schlesinger in a flamewar that runs many of the "old guard" off RSPW. 1.17 Mattie Carrington A long time poster on RSPW. Was one of the few female posters who stuck it out on RSPW for a long time. RSPW Highlights: - In the RSPW Horsemen with Conn MacKintosh, Gern Blanston and XJelX. - Was voted a RSPW moderator but quit after she decided she didn't want to accept that responsibility. Also known as: Mattie Galban, Mattie's Ghost 1.18 Michael Palij Also known as "The Bogus Prophet". Original RSPWM moderator. Staunch RSPWM flag waver. Known for his use of statistics and analogies to make his point. RSPW Highlights: - Fire bombs RSPW for over a year after RSPWM's creation, despite fact he is a moderator and proponent of RSPWM as an alternative to RSPWM's troll problem. - Flamewars with Dave Scherer, Allan Benson, Bogus Sting over the course of several years. - Attended the first (and so far, only) RSPW Convention. 1.19 Pete Barlow Ex-RSPWer who is best known for brining RSPWF (and by association, the RSPW fed concept) into popularity. RSPW Highlights: - Revives RSPWF January 1994. - Announces retirement from RSPWF August 1995 after months of bickering following the creation of rec.sport.pro-wrestling.fantasy 1.20 Philip Stromer Might be the ORIGINAL RSPW troll. Legend has it that he was a quote-unquote "normal" poster way back in the day. Later created the phrase "rootslurper" as an insult. Don't ask us what the hell it means. RSPW Highlights: - Hold on, we're thinking... :) 1.21 Rick Scaia Now known as the writer of the Online Onslaught (formerly the News from Dayton) sheet, "Slick Rick" was a RSPW poster some years ago. RSPW Highlights: - The last and current reigning RSPWF champion. 1.22 Rob Cypher Was at first a crossposting spammer, but has since shown RSPW some benevolence by toning it down. Cypher is known as a user of banned (and unbanned) substances and as a druggie who thinks he is a man-God. RSPW Highlights: - His posts of his adventures while under the influence. 1.23 Sabu424 Originally an AOL troll who posted "inside scoops" that were already well known or just plain wrong, the "character" of Sabu424 was resurected more than once and turned into a crossposting spammer troll. RSPW Highlights: - Uhhhh... we'll get back to you! Sabu424 Ver 2.0 also know as: The Blue Avenger, Zafar, Rob Hill Sabu424 Ver 3.0 also know as: Keith Carrot 1.24 Scott Keith Ex-RSPW personality Scott Keith spearheaded the RSPWM movement on serveral occassions. Eventually he won, but as a recent newsboard post showed, he got more than he barganed for. Also runs a website called Rantsylvania. RSPW Highlights: - Infamous "Goodbye" post to RSPW after RSPWM passed. - Net.Cop busts to the theme of "Bad Boys". - Former keeper of the RSPW FAQ. 1.25 The Smell of Fear The original RSPW "invasion" was more a parody of the (then new) NWO angle. Members included: Vizh/NoSoul of ScoopThis.com, Gern Blanston (trusty sidekick), Scott Keith and Zoogz Rift (was to TSoF like Pete Best was to the Beatles). RSPW Highlights: - The t-shirt sale posts, which actually got replies from interested distributers! 1.26 The Sith Trolls Could also be called "The Alliance against Chadamania". Main purpose: destroy Chad Bryant. Memebers included: Pete KOF, The Avenger, StoneGolym, Crystal Meth and Al Bundy. At the beginning memebers replaced their first name with "Darth", but that got old as Star Wars faded from memory. Broke up when Meth disappeared, Bundy left RSPW and Stone quit the group. RSPW Highlights: - StoneGolym's very public exit from the Sith Trolls, leading to the running off of Al Bundy. 1.27 The Triple Threat The name of various groups in RSPW history, including: 1. any combo with En4cer and Rob Blake or 2. the combo of Pete KOF, MaxVegasJD (Also known as: MaxDaAxeJD, Fergusbull) and XStrength. 1.28 The Ultimate Alliance Group of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior worshipers who post everything in ALL CAPS. If you are not a U.A. member, please do not type in ALL CAPS because then you are just plain annoying. :) Members: Too many to keep track of. But the founding fathers were ILOVEHOGAN and ILOVEUWxx in mid-1998. RSPW Highlights: - The infamous U.A. work where they fooled RSPW into believing they were breaking up. 1.29 The Workrate Cru A group of posters who gathered together in 1999 because they were tired of being called "workrate freaks" due to their dislike of wrestling's new Sports Entertainment direction. Founders: Jonathan Snowden and Anthony Gancarski. RSPW Highlights: - Gancarkski peevs off RSPW when he criticises their grief for the recently-departed Owen Hart in May 1999. - Know to "close" threads not related to wrestling. 1.30 Troll World Order Perhaps the biggest single collective in RSPW history. A parody/parallel of the NWO angle in WCW, was known for their "do what we want to do" attitude and running off most of the "old school" who were still left. Founders: Pete KOF, MaxVegasJD (a.k.a. MaxDaAxeJD, Fergusbull) and XXStrength Rollins. Like the NWO, it went on until it wasn't funny anymore and everybody quit. Later attempts by Pete KOF to revive the group failed. One later attempt eventually became the Sith Trolls. RSPW Highlights (might be more like a lowlight section): - Started RSPW invasion of other newsgroups. - Flamewars between various members and John Henry, Scott Keith, Mike Palij, Mattie C., etc. blew a big hole in the newsgroup for a good healthy chunck of 1998. - Paved way for other, less creative trolls to flood RSPW. 1.31 Tom Zyklin Has promoted himself on RSPW under various monikers, including: The Bandit, "Dollywood", ArdenGuy and "A Real Man's Man". Helped to created RSPWWCW but quit and left RSPW, but then popped up again from time to time. RSPW Highlights: - Creates what would become RSPWWCW with Liz Michael in 1996. - Originator of the RSPW Heatseeker's list. 1.32 Vizh/NoSoul He used to be known on RSPW as Vizh, but these days is NoSoul on ScoopThis.com, a site he created after RSPW's environment turned too harsh. RSPW Highlights: - The RSPW Ejaculator newsletter/flight of fancy. - Creator of The Smell of Fear. Also known as: Erik Robichaud, Erik Ashley. 1.33 Waru To appreciate Waru is to appreciate being called a "vermin". In his short stay on RSPW, Waru developed more enemies and fans than most RSPWers get in a lifetime. His mission: to show us our mistakes and revel in it. RSPW Highlights: - Brief flamewar with Scott Keith. - The "who is Waru" mystery, eventually unraveled by one Barry "Bairman" Moore. Maybe. 1.34 Zoogz Rift Zoogz's short and sweet connection with wrestling as a manager in some indy fed means anything to do with Zoogz should be allowed on RSPW, right? Well, that's what he thinks. Loves the work of Frank Zappa and is something like a musician himself! Suffered a heart attack in 1999, kept him off the internet for most of the year. RSPW Highlights: - Zoogz Rift's School of the Criminally Insane sold us on the teachings of Zoogz at a reasonable price. - Crossposts ALL his posts to alt.fan.zoogz-fan, alt.fan.frank-zappa, alt.fan.captain-beefheart, etc. - Retired from USEnet, now on his own site: http://www.zoogzrift.com/ --------------------------------------------------------- Part 2: Parody Feds --------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------- A. The Basics --------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 What are RSPW parody feds? These babies are works of satire and parody that mock pro-wrestling and RSPW in general. If you don't like these sometimes huge babies of overactive imaginations clogging your newsreader, killfile it, man! 2.0.1 How do I join a RSPW parody fed? You DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT "join" these things, the writers see you and they write you in. That's how this works, got it? So, you're never in one? Well, life ain't fair sometimes. 2.0.2 Which is the best RSPW parody fed? Read them all and decide for yourself! Maybe you'll join the millions and [pause] MILLIONS of RSPW* fans out there in waiting for the next exciting episode of you fav! 2.0.3 What is RSPWF? rec.sport.pro-wrestling-fantasy is a newsgroup for e-wrestling. (a.k.a. you participate in writing fantasy) This is NOT the same thing as RSPW feds, which have a fantasy element but are not games. (well, most of them aren't...) --------------------------------------------------------- B. Specific RSPW Feds --------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 RSPWF (Jan 1994-Jan 1996, Dec 1996) NOT the same thing as RSPWF the newsgroup. The originator of the whole RSPW fed concept. Been dead for years. Origins are in 1991/1992 when Don Becker created the World Bandwidth Title, the first RSPW title. It died but was resurrected in January 1994 by Pete Barlow. Was brought back three more time by Steve Black, Rob Hoffmann and Jeff Wahlman respectively. Archived with some info on the whole deal at: http://www.primenet.com/~robster/rspwf/ 2.2 RSPWWCW (Oct 1996-Sept 1999, Dec 1999-Apr 2000) By far the raunchiest fed. Lasted almost 4 years! Started by Tom Zyklin and Liz Michael as a RSPW stable called the Dungeon of Darkness. Was passed on to The Avenger and Stephen Morelock in Dec. 1999, but Morelock left less than a month later over the creative direction. In April 2000 Liz Michael took control back again. Currently out of business. It'll probably be propped again up like the body in "Weekend At Bernie's", whenever the Taskmistress returns. Has a web site but it's horribly out of date: http://members.tripod.com/~rspwwcw/ 2.3 RSPWWWF (Sept 1998-Jan 1999) A short lived alternative to RSPWWCW. Some of it's writers still post, reflecting on the good ole days of yore. Created by The Pissant, D|sciple and Stefan Damian. This fed lasted from about September 1998 to February 1999 before it went kaput. 2.4 RSPWECW (Jan 1999-Sept 2000) A marvel of modern technology, this illustrious fed survived the booking of that rascal FunkyM for a year and a half! Web site is at: http://homestead.deja.com/user.funkym/rspwecw.html 2.5 Other Parody Feds Some other people have attempted to write these things. They found out it was more work than it looks! RSPWNWA and other feds have popped up from time to time. --------------------------------------------------------- Part 3: The Mod Wars --------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 What is RSPWM? RSPWM is rec.sport.pro-wrestling-moderated, the RSPW sister newsgroup where people screen your post before deciding if it meets the specs layed out in the charter. Read the charter at: http://rspwm.crz.net/charter.html 3.1 Who controls RSPWM? Here's the list of active moderators: Christopher Robin Zimmerman (crz@rspwm.crz.net) "The Bogus Prophet" Michael Palij (bokonon@rspwm.crz.net) ViNNY (vinny@rspwm.crz.net) The mods are always playing "tit au tat" over whether some of them are going to step down. We'll keep you posted! These people were official moderators, but stepped down for some reason or another. What, does this look like a history text or somethin'? :) Jeremy Billones Mattie Carrington (a.k.a. Mattie G.) Gern Blanston Scott Keith 3.2 How did this sumbitch get started? Since 1995 a lot of people had been getting less and less satisfied with the quality of discussion on RSPW, so they kept running votes on creating the moderated RSPW until eventually one passed. Not everyone was happy, but you can't always get what you want! 3.3 So which is better: RSPW or RSPWM? We'll let you, the home viewer, decide for yourself! --------------------------------------------------------- Part 4: Stupid RSPW Jokes --------------------------------------------------------- 4.1 Is Sid Really dead? No, when people say Sid Eudy (a.k.a. Sid Vicious, Sid Justice, Psycho Sid) is dead, he's not really dead. It's a joke that was started because he vanishes off the face of the earth for months at a time when he screws up and is fired from whichever wrestling fed he works for. 4.2 Who is Who? Who is Jim "the Anvil" Neidhart. In 1996 Jim Neidhart played a character called "Who" on one or two WWF TV shows. Ever since RSPW has been playing a variation on the "Who's on first?" routine. Q: Who's on first? A: Neidhart is. 4.3 Who is Steve DiSalvo? Before Who, the big RSPW in-joke was a guy named Steve DiSalvo. One time, back in the day, word has it somebody asked who Razor Ramon was. The reply: Steve DiSalvo, who it obviously wasn't. (it was Scott Hall!) After that, whenever some new wrestler appeared people would say it was Steve DiSalvo. People have also made jokes that Steve DiSalvo was one of the Ultimate Warriors (there was only one, Jim Hellwig), an Undertaker (Mark Calloway and for one night only, Brian Lee at Summerslam '94) or some other wrestler that people think looks different from the last time they saw them. 4.4 Who is Anal Warts Kelly? In 1999 RSPW raided a web site allegedly made by a young girl named Kelly who's boyfriend had anal warts. We all found out later that it was a big scam, but not before the guest book was flooded by thousands of hits. 4.5 Did Vader really fuck all those people? The "Vader fucked [insert every name you can think of here]" routine was started as a troll for heat by RSPW one-hit-wonder Pope of my Pants. It kind of grew on some people though. 4.6 What was RSPW-G? The RSPW-Government was started by Alex Demchuk as a joke to assign people on RSPW government roles. It later sparked a short lived RSPW-Confederacy. 4.7 Who is Larry Michaels and Himherit? These are nicknames given to Liz Michael by various foes to make fun of her gender-bender backstory. 4.8 What's this about Demolition losing the tag titles? Started by U.A. member Trevor Lowe as a response to people who say things that everybody already figured out. If somebody asks if you heard Demolition lost the tag titles, that means you're reporting old news. (Demolition lost the tag titles back in 1990!) 4.9 How come no one knows how to spell POLL? In the summer of 1999 RSPW was gripped by a plague of [POLL] posts. Things got to the point that many people were simply killfiling all posts with the word POLL in the subject line. So, people started creatively mispelling POLL in order to avoid the killfiles. The misspelling "POLE" is often used for polls about sex. 4.10 Where's Imoud, PA? The fictional town where Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw (subbing for Bob Holly) pinned Psycho Sid to become the new WWF Champion! 4.11 What are all these "Hey Barnett..." posts? People like to ask RSPW personality Bob Barnett stuff all the time. Probably because he's close friends with pro-grappler Vampiro and so kind of an insider. --------------------------------------------------------- Part 5: Miscellaneous --------------------------------------------------------- 5.0 What is META? It stands for "METAtextual discussion". (a.k.a. talk about the newsgroup) 5.1 What famous wrestlers have posted to RSPW? Probably a lot more than we think! But the confirmed ones are: Jeff Jones, Francine, ex-regular RSPWer Lash Laroux, Marc Mero, Rena Mero, Dory Funk Jr., Panama Jack Capri, Nicole Bass, Diamond Dallas Page and the late Brian Pillman. Unconfirmed: Disco Inferno, Bob Holly. (There is some debate on the authenticity of these posts) 5.2 What is RSPWI? rec.sport.pro-wrestling.info was created in 1995 as a light volume alternative to RSPW. It is for information-only posts. Discussion takes place in RSPW or RSPWM. Currently it's moderated by Christopher Robin Zimmerman. 5.3 Binaries. Where can I find them? Satyr is the friendly proprieter and creator of a newsgroup called alt.binaries.pro-wrestling that was made just for the occasion! There's a FAQ at: http://www.autobahn.mb.ca/~jackson/ 5.4 What is alt.fan.don.no-soul.simmons? In 1995/1996, several RSPWers found this dead newsgroup and used it for discussion amongst themselves. Much controversy followed. Don "No Soul" Simmons was a character from the 1970's cult movie "Amazon Women On The Moon". He was a black man born without soul. Incidently, this is where the poster known as Vizh got his current nom de plume, although he admitted he didn't know the RSPW historical reference that he took it from. 5.5 What's this about an RSPW dedicated web page? There are a couple around and there will probably be more. Here's the known ones: 4L now runs this one originally created by YourRoleModel: http://www.angelfire.com/wrestling/RSPW/ http://www.rspw.co.uk/ is a new site run by ViNNY. http://www.rspw.net/ is up too. --------------------------------------------------------- Part 6: Famous Chatrooms --------------------------------------------------------- 6.0 What are chatrooms? They're places for live discussion. There are a few well known hangouts for RSPWers and ex-RSPWers alike! Most people connect using a program called MIRC, found at: http://www.mirc.com/ 6.1 #RSPW/#RSPWchat (DALnet) Started as an AOL chat room, but moved to DALnet when Warriorman had a stroke of genius. Later moved to BIRC, then to WebChat. After some internal self-distructing in July 2000, some people went back to DALnet and started #RSPWchat. #RSPW also exists there and on WebChat. 6.2 What was WrestleChat? It was an experiment by Jeff Wahlman (a.k.a. Fro) to created a network for wrestling fans in 1999. It failed to catch on for various reasons. 6.3 #wrestling (alternative.net) Another wrestling chatroom where some ex-RSPWers hang out. Probably nobody anyone remembers now. If you're in the mood, check it out. They know their wrestling! --------------------------------------------------------- For any further RSPW FUQ info, to point out a mistake or just for fun, contact FunkyM at: funkym@my-deja.com -- You are what you is!!! http://homestead.deja.com/user.funkym/ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
